Man Invents Gyroscope Scooter

Single-rider device meant to replace cars for short trips
(AP) - “I T ’ is a scooter.
Capping months o f speculation about his
mysterious innovation, an inventor unveiled
the device Monday - a gyroscope-stabilized,
battery-powered scoc ter that he hopes wi 11 revo­
lutionize short-distance travel.
Dean Kamen and his backers are banking on
the Segway Human Transporter to displace
cars, leading to a realigned cityscape that's
more people-friendly.
The single-rider Segway, until now known only
by its code names IT and Ginger, “will be to the car
what the car was to the horse and buggy," Kamen
boasted in this week’s Time magazine. “Cars are
great for going long distances. But it makes no
sense at all for people incities to use a4,000-pound
piece ofmetal.’’
Monday morning, Kamen and the hosts of
ABC’s “Good Morning America’ ’ took the scooter
for a spin in Manhattan’s Bryant Park, demon­
strating maneuvers and cruising up and down
ramps as crowds watched.

This is a full-time, limited duration position expected to end on June 30.
2003. This position is currently located in Salem but consideration will be
given to relocating within the state. The Telecommunications Coordinator
serves as the primary representative for the Department throughout the
state of Oregon. This position interprets department and program policy and
guidelines, providing technical assistance to communities in the
assessment of needs and in the formulation of solutions, evaluating and
supporting proposed community training projects for increasing the
utilization of the Telecommunications Infrastructure improvements,
monitoring progress of approved projects, coordinabng planning and project
implementation with appropriate regional teams within the Department, and
assisting in the development and revision of program policy and guidelines.
This position primarily interacts with representatives from the community,
elected officials, providers of the telecommunications services, partners
who can offer training solutions to communities in need, and various
department staff. Salary is $3.016 - $4,223 monthly with excellent
