Recreating a Classic Greek Myth With Modern Context

exciting new dram a that explores the stuff
o f dream s, im agination, and passion -
the quest to capture beauty and escape
the torm ent o f o n e’s circum stances.
The G reek m yth o f the boy whose wax
wings melted when he flew too close to the
sun, shares the name with Edwin Sanchez’s
play currently in production at the Miracle
Theater, "Icarus.” In the original story,
Icarus is given wings by his father in order
to escape from the treacherous labyrinth
o f the M inotaur. M esm erized by the sen
suous heat the dazzling brilliance o f the
sun, the young man is draw n ever upward
in an attem pt to touch the source o f the
radiant beauty. But the heat turns deadly,
melting the w ax that bind his feathers into
w ings, plunging him to his death in the sea
far below.
A s in the original m yth, Sanchez’s
“Icarus” also explores the stuff o f dreams,
im agination, and passion - the quest to
capture beauty and escape the torm ent
o f o n e ’s circum stances. W hat is extraor
dinary about this “Icarus” is the m atter-
of-fact w ay in w hich we are introduced to
the rem arkable characters that live in his
world, dam aged, physically or otherwise.

Former Cocaine Drug Boss Extradited to U.S.

bid to avoid extradition ended,
C olom bian drug kingpin Fabio
O choa w as delivered to the U nited
States to face charges that he be
longed to a gang that smuggled in
30 tons o f cocaine a month.
Ochoa, a former top leader of the
notorious M edellin cartel, is the
highest-proftle Colom bian sent to
face charges in the United States
since Colombia revived extraditions
in 1997.
D espite years o f U.S.-backed
drug-fighting efforts, C olom bia
rem ains the w orld’s leading co
caine exporting nation and an in
creasingly im portant source o f the
heroin sold in this country.
The State D epartm ent warned
A m ericans in Colom bia to take ex
tra security precautions, noting
“the past history o f narcotics traf
fickers conducting bom bings in
public areas as a reprisal for or
deterrent to extradition.”
Ochoa fought extradition peace
fully with legal appeals and an
Internet page outlining his defense,
and by e re ctin g b illb o ard s in
Bogota and M edellin proclaiming:
“ Yesterday I made a mistake, today
I am innocent.”
That struggle ended when he
was put on a DEA plane in Bogota
after a Colom bian judge lifted an
order he had granted earlier sus
pending the handover.
In 1990, O choa was the first m a
jo r Colom bian trafficker to surren
der in return for a prom ise that he
would not be extradited.
W hen he and tw o older brothers
w erereleasedfrom jailin 1996, they
prom ised never to get involved in
the drug business again.
The U.S. extradition request,
based largely on bugged conver
sations, says O choa broke that
pledge, contributing his know-how
to the exporting ring and helping
provide cocaine, airplanes and
smuggling routes.
O choa was arrested in October
1999 along with dozens o f other
suspected traffickers.

a state visit by challenging P resident B ush to w ork out a bilateral
m igration agreem ent before the end o f year. Flanked by Bush on the
W hite H ouse South I^ w n , Fox said he envisions an agreem ent that
will allow him and B ush, before the end o f their respective term s in
office, “to m ake sure that there are no M exicans w ho have not entered
this country legally in the U nited States and that those M exicans
w ho have com e into the country do so w ith the p rop er d o cu m en ts.”
W hite H ouse spokesm an A ri F leischer said he did not know w hat
Fox m eant by setting a year-end goal for an agreem ent. H e said he
hoped to find out in the m eetings betw een U.S. and M exican officials,
w hich w ere being held after the w elcom ing cerem ony.
M exican em bassy officials said they w ere equally puzzled by

to U.S. authorities in 1987. He was
sentenced in Jacksonville to life
without parole, plus 135 years.
Under the Medellin cartel’s pres
sure, extradition was declared un
constitutional in 1991. C olom bia

States. Since then, three dozen
Colom bians have been extradited
to the United States.
If convicted, O choa could face
up to life in prison. The minimum on
two charges — conspiracy to im
port cocaine into the United States
and conspiracy to possess with
intent to distribute cocaine — is 10
years, and the least he could serve
on a charge o f money laundering
