The Maize Sauvie Island’s “Corny” Attraction
Volume XXXI Number 33
A look at Portland and its entertainment
Visitors can go through the twists and turns In a cornfield at Sauvie Island, which makes up the heron
shaped labyrinth designed by Brett Herbst.
Wednesday August 15, 2001
Oregonians may just find
themselves face to face with
a 400-foot Heron this fall
when they visit the Maize at
Sauvie Island’s Pumpkin
Patch. The state’s original
cornfield labyrinth is return
ing for its third season and
with its new design is offer
ing a few new twists.
The popular puzzle, that
drew an audience of more
than 30,000 last year, will
once again seek to challenge
the wits of those seeking its
one exit when it is open until
Hallow een (w eather and
field conditions permitting).
Part of an increasingly popu
lar “agritainment" trend, this
year the maze is celebrating
the diversity o f Sauvie
Island's wildlife.
Easterly, “The Pumpkin
Patch’’ and “Maze” designer
Brett Herbst - the world’s
leading designer o f 206 com
mazes - hope to give more
people a chance to experi
ence the unique source of
good farmin’ fun in their
newly-designed labyrinth.
Though the correct pathways
can be walked in under 30
minutes, most visitors will
require about one hour to
travel through more than two
miles of twists and turns and
85 decision points.
