‘Wander’ring Minstrel’ Remembered
A m em orial service w as held M ay 11, 2001, in F irst C ongregational
C hurch in V ancouver, W ash., for W ilton Julius “ Bill” Slocum , w ho died
M ay 6 at age 84. Mr. Slocum was bom M arch 12,1917, in M obridge S.D. He
graduated frorm D akota W esleyan University. D uring W orld W ar II, he
served in the A rm y in the South Pacific and earned a Purple Heart. H e m oved
to V ancouver in 1948.
H e w as a tenor in operas, light operas and solo perform ances, was
featured as the “ W and ’ring M instrel’’ on K PO J Radio in the 1950s. He also
w as a private voice coach and taught m usic at L ieser Elem entary, Lew is
Ju n io r H igh School, F ort V ancouver H igh School and at D avid D ouglas
H igh School in Portland until retiring in 1975. H e founded and led several
choral groups, including the Brahm s Singers. In 1941, he m arried Irm a
H ershey. Survivors include his wife; sons, D avid and John; daughters, Julie
R obinson, B ecky A ndrew s and Beth N ye; 16 grandchildren; and tw o great­
grandchildren.
