Mathis' Show
During the month o f February,

Mathis” will air three in-show vi­

rican-Americans who helped build
this country. Judge Mathis states,
“ ...in the hearts and minds o f most
African-Americans, Black History is
celebrated every day.” These spots
focus on Justice Thurgod Marshall,
the first African-American Supreme
Court Justice; Gwendolyn Brooks, a
literary icon and trailblazer in the area
of poetry; W.E.B. Dubois, the first
African-American to earn his Ph.D.
from Harvard University and best
known for founding the National
Association for the Advancement of
Colored People (NAACP) in 1909.
In addition, Judge Mathis cel­
ebrates Garret Morgan, the inventor
o f the traffic light; Dr. Daniel Hale
Williams, who performed the first
open heart surgery in the U.S.; Dr.
Charles Drew for his work with the
storage and transfusion of blood;
Jackie Robinson, the legendary ath­
lete who desegregated professional
baseball; Clara McBride Hale, the
founder of the Hale House in Harlem
and Dr. Jonetta B. Cole, the first Af­
rican-American President ofSpellman
College in Atlanta.
