S ynopsis: T he life o f a m iner’s son
in N orthern England is forever
changed one day when he stum bles
upon a ballet class on his way to
boxing lessons. Joining the class,
keeping it a secret from his w id­
o w e d f a th e r an d o v e rb e a rin g
brother, 11-year-old Billy finds him ­
self in dance, demonstrating the kind
o f raw talent seldom seen by the
c la ss’ ex actin g instructor, M rs.
W ilkinson. She encourages him to
try out for the Royal Ballet School
in London, w here he can refine his
craft w hile escaping his oppressive
surroundings. But when his father
and brother find out about the ballet
class and forbid him to continue,
Billy is tom betw een his responsi­
bility to his fam ily and to the gift
w ith w hich he has been blessed. His
overw helm ing desire to dance has
becom e m uch more to him than
sim ply a m eans o f self-expression.
It is his passion, and it is his destiny.
