an actor shot to death by police as he
allegedly w ielded a fake gun at a
H allow een costum e party are ques­
tioning w hether race played a role in
the killing.

thony D wain Lee early Saturday as
he and another officer investigated a
noise com plaint at the W est Los
A ngeles m ansion w here hundreds o f
people had attended the party, offi­
cials said.
“ H e’s a black m an w ho died in a
w hite neighborhood,” M ary Lin. one
o f L ee’s friends, told the Los Angeles
Times.
Police said H opper, who also is
black, and his partner arrived at the
residence about 1 a.m. Saturday, and
w ere searching for the ow ner when

Broughton, a police spokesw om an.

ing a training exercise was shot by his

nition, according to new details o fth e
shooting.
C la c k a m a s C o u n ty S h e r if f ’s
D eputy Bill B ow m an, 35, was shot in
the head Sept. 12 by firearm s instruc­
to r K evin Vail. A ll w eapons used
during exercises at Cam p Rilea on the
north O regon coast are supposed to
be loaded w ith blanks.
A ccording to a docum ent released
by the C lackam as C ounty S h e riffs
D epartm ent, V ail had been helping
another officer load his w eapon.
W hile trying to fit a m agazine into
the firearm, theo fficerto o k aclip from
the SW A T team van that had been
pre-loaded w ith live rounds.
The m agazine fit, and D eputy Vail,
who w as briefly distracted by an­
oth er o fficer, co n clu d ed that the
w eapon, not the clip, w as faulty. He

A lliance” says that K roeker, w hile a
m em ber o f the Los A ngelese Police
D epartm ent spoke to a group ofC hris-
tian officers and m ade anti-gay and
anti-abortion statem ents.
M onday, K roeker released a state­
m ent saying the rem arks w ere m ade
as part o f a church-related gathering
ow n gun. He did not know the clip
had been exchanged for one that was
filled w ith live rounds.
