It’s the next step in a pilot study to
determine if Hillsboro police target
minorities disproportionately w hen
making traffic stops, a practice know n
as racial profiling.
The Hillsboro Police Department,
the first in O regon to launch the pro­
gram in M ay, has just expanded the
study from five officers to include its
entire patrol forceof54. Several other
O regon agencies plan to start similar
programs next year.
Police and state leaders across the
nation hav e struggled to address the
perception that police engage in racial
profiling. Nearly 60 percent o f the
public thinks the practice is wide­
spread, according to a G allup poll
released in December.
T o answ er critics, at least seven
states, including W ashington, have
passed laws requiring police to collect
traffic data. A t least 25 states have
introduced legislation in the last two
years to address the problem.
