PCC WELCOMES 33,740 students to
our doors this fall. By the end of the year,
more than 97,000 people will enroll at
PCC. We are proud to be able to serve so
many of you.

Third Graders Work on Self-Esteem and Academics

Third graders in the Woodlawn
community o f northeast Portland will
again be getting a boost thanks to
Saturday School.
The program, designed to boost a
child’s self-esteem and academics,
opens at the end o f this month.
Saturday School began in October
1990 in the community room o f the
Woodlawn United Methodist Church
at northeast 15th and Dekum.
Last year, 36 students were en
rolled over 10 Saturdays instead of
the usual 21 weeks because o f bud
get restraints.
But this y ear, the Saturday
School volunteer staff o f 3 adult
teachers, along with parents and
other volunteers, want to provide
the learning for 30 students over a
25 week period.
The emphasis for third grad
ers will be preparing themselves
for state achievement tests in
May.
