Shakespeare Com pany,
P o rtla n d ’s only all-
Shakespearean theater,
kicks off its 2000-2001
season with the dark com
edy “Variation on Mea
sure
for M e a su re ,”
adapted by acclaimed the
ater director and author
Charles Marowitz. Often
referred to as a “problem
play,” “Measure for Mea
sure” is a commentary on
power, religion and poli
tics. Set against a back
ground f political corrup
tion and a licentious un
derworld, a religious no
vitiate is forced to make a
decision that could spare
her brother’s life but alter
her own forever.
“This is a play about
male dominance and sex
as pow er,” said Nancy
Doherty, Tygres Heart’s
Artistic Director. “It’s re
ligion vs. politics, govern
ment legislating morality.
What does saving your
virginity really mean in
the context of how far you
will go to save a life?”
“Variations on Measure
for Measure” is the first
of three plays in Tygres
H eart’s 2000-2001 sea
son. Tygres Heart will
also p rese n t “ T w elfth
Night,” directed by Jim
Cox. Originally commis
sioned by Elizabeth I as a
celebration of the end of
the h o lid a y seaso n ,
“Twelfth Night or What
You Will" is a play about
passion pretentiousness
and mistaken identities.
