A diverse class o f 96 entering, first-
year medical students at Oregon
Health Sciences University stood
Friday and recited a medical creed
called the Oath o f Geneva.
The ritual was one o f the first duties
o f the class o f 2004 as they become
more aware o f their professional
responsibilities.
They were also cloaked in their first
white coats, a symbol of the physician-
patient relationship. The message:
physicians should care as well as
cure.
These first year medical students were
also encouraged to lead noble and
honorable lives.
The class o f 2004 is comprised o f
students from Portland, the greater
N orthw est and from across the
country. The largest minority group
c o n siste d o f 11 stu d e n ts w ho
identified them selves as A sian-
A m e ric a n s, th re e stu d e n ts as
Hispanic, one as African-American,
and one from Puerto Rico. Four
students did not specify an ethic
background.
TheOHSU School ofM edicine is the
direct descendant o f the University
o f Oregon School o f Medicine that
first opened its doors in Portland in
1887 and graduated its first class the
following year.
Only one other medical school in the
west has a longer lineage; only 33 o f
the present 125 medical schools in
the United States existed prior to the
founding o f the School ofM edicine
in Oregon.
