Obituaries
In Loving Memory o f
education and housing in the State o f
Oregon. Mr. Rutherford’s leadership
and forthright ideas on racial equality
combined with Mrs. Rutherford’s
w riting and publishing skills to
provide newsletters and notices that
galvanized community support. Mr.
And Mrs. Rutherford helped to write
the Oregon Civil Rights Bill and were
serving as president and secretary o f
the Portland NAACP when the bill
was passed in 1953. During their time
o f leadership, the NAACP Federal
Credit Union was organized and
located in their home. A public citizen
and outspoken proponent o f equal
rights andjustice, Mr.Rutherford will
be remembered by family and friends
for his forthrightness, affection and
humor, his love for children and his
tireless support for com m unity
progress. He is survived by his wife
Verdell, their daughter and eldest son,
six grandchildren and ten-great-
grandchildren. Mr. Rutherford’s life’s
accomplishments can be seen in an

A funeral service was held for Erma
“T ee” Jenkins at 11:00 on 8/15/00 at
the Genesis Community Church (Mt.
Sinai). Erma Jenkins died on 8/12/00
o f natural causes. Bom 12/30/24 in
Louis, Mississippi. She attended
Genesis Community Church (Mt.
Sinai) and her occupation was a
Homemaker. Survivors ofErma “Tee”

Otto G. Rutherford passed away on
August 14 at the age o f 89. His life’s
work promoted social justice and
opportunities for African Americans
and influenced race relations in the
W est over the course o f the century.
Born in P ortland in 1911, Mr.
Rutherford came from a family o f four
brothers. Mr. Rutherford had the
good fortune to m eet Verdell A.
Burdine when they were eight and six
years old, respectively. They were
married in 1936and had three children,
William, Earle and Charlotte. Together
they were the leadership o f the
Portland branch o f the N ational
Organization for the Advancement
ofColored People (NAACP) at acrucial
time. The Organization pushed for
equal opportunity and the end o f
ra c ia l d isc rim in a tio n in public
a c c o m m o d a tio n s, em p lo y m en t.

A funeral service was held for Euqenia
M. (Jeanie) Heginbotham on August
29, 2000 Forest Grove Methodist
Church at 1:30 p.m. Euqenia M.
Heginbotham was bom on July 15,
1920 in Oretown, OR and died August
23 in Hillsboro, OR ofC ancer related
illness at the age o f 80 years old. Mrs.
Heginbotham was employed by The
City ofForest Grove as a Billing Clerk
until 1982,and wasamemberofForest

Geraldine Nelson-Smith was bom
June 3, 1944 in D onaldsonville,
Louisiana and died on August 22,
2000 in Portland, Oregon o f Natural
causes at the age o f 56 years old. She
was employed as a Teachers Aid,
which she retired and was a member
o f Highland United Church o f Christ
and graduated from Jefferson High

The 26 Churches o f Metro East Portland Interfaith Hospitality Network
(MEPIHN) are hosting a Huge Multi-Church Garage Sale, Friday and
Saturday, Sept. 8 & 9,9 am - 5pm at St. Timothy Lutheran Church, 14500
SE Powell, Portland.
All members of the participating churches have been invited to clean out
their basements and attics to help provide items for the sale.
Metro East Portland Interfaith Hospitality network is a growing volunteer
coalition o f 26 congregations from various spiritual traditions, with
support from several community service organizations. Our program
began in October o f 1999 to provide temporary shelter, food, transportation
and professional counseling support to homeless families as they look for
housing and employment. We host as many as fourteen children and
parents around the clock in our various facilities seven days a week, and
can provide several significant success stories.

Alberta in Portland for the last 7 years.
He was baptized at Vancouver Ave.

o f the late Reverend O.B. Williams.
Bobby was raised and educated here
in Portland and was a graduate o f
L incoln H igh S chool. H e was
preceded in death by his father,
Richard Moore in 1980, and by his
sister, Shirley Marie Moore in 1989.
Bobby passed away on August 28,
2000 in Pasco, Washington.
Funeral services will be held on
September 5, 2000 at 11:00 am,
Vancouver Avenue First Baptist
Church, Portland, OR.
Disposition will be held at the Rose
CityCemetery.
