This year marks the 20lh anniversary
o f the C athedral Park Jazz Festival
under the St. Johns bridge. The
festival begins on Saturday, July
15, and Sunday, July 16.
T he first group is called Forte. It is

bandstand. Last year, this group
booked several gigs after its torrid

P a’Lante, a nine-piece Latin band
will finish o ff the day on July 15
w ith a great program , starting at 6
pm. Led by tim bales player, N ick
G efroh, the band also includes bass,
piano, congas, bongo, saxophone/
flute, trom bone, trum pet and violin.

T his fiery band has been thrilling
N orthw est audiences since 1985.
P a’Lante offers a w ide variety o f
A fro-C aribbean sounds including
salsa, m am bo, g u aracha, plena,
bom ba„m erengue, cum bia, cha cha
cha and bolero.
On Sunday, July 16, the action kicks
o ff w ith the T ony Pacini T rio at 12
noon. His trio will also include Ed
B ennett on bass and Tim Rapp on
drums. This com bo has only recently
decided to w ork together, but y o u ’d
n e v e r k n o w it fro m th e tig h t
harm ony. T he trio is recording a
new CD , w hich it hopes will be
ready for release by early sum m er.
At 2 pm, Bossam ba, led by guitarist/
vocalist R onnie Robins, takes over
the stage. Band m em bers include
G a ry H a r ris o n f lu te a n d
saxophones; D avid Lucas, bass, and
C arl Sm ith, percussion.
At Cathedral Park Jazz F estiv al’s 4
p m s lo t, W illia m G a lis o n , a
harm onica w izard from N ew York,
w ill a p p e ar w ith a local band.
G alison also is com poser o f note.
He ow ns an O scar forhis score for
“ T h e U n to u c h a b le s ” . H e a lso
com posed sound tracks for Bagdad
C afé, and P relude to a Kiss and has
perform ed w ith D ebra Harry, Sting,
C haka Khan, and on Saturday Night
Live.
T he headliner on Sunday, July 16,
at 6 pm, w ill be fam ed bandleader/
com poser'arranger Pete Rugolo and
singer Robert Hicks with the Carlton
Jackson/D ave M ills Big Band and
special guest perform ance by C onte
C o n d o li o n tr u m p e t. R u g o lo
conducted and C ondoli played on
H icks’ second CD , Textures in H iFi,
w hich has received rave review s.
Rugolo w as the ch ie f arranger for
Stan K enton’s big band for m any
years and C ondoli w as the lead
trum pet in that band. Rugolo has
w ritten for television and film in
re c e n t y e a rs. F u tu re issu e s o f
Jazzscene will be profiling R ugolo’s
distinguished career.
Be sure to bring a blanket and beach
chairs to the C athedral Park Jazz
Festival and plan to sam ple the
delicious possibilities offered by
m any local food vendors at the site.
