Redskins sign Deion Sanders
won in four straight games over
Portland. Previously, the highest-
rated Western Conference final Game
7 was Seattle’s 90- 86 win over Utah
in 1996, which drew a 13.7.
“W e’ve been saying all along that
with good stories and close games
the people will be there,” said Kevin
Sullivan, an NBC spokesman.
Los Angeles trailed by as many as 16
points late in the third quarter. Coming

4.1 points during the regular season,
scored 11 points, including three
three- point baskets.

During the regular season, NBC’s

contract.
R e it e r s
The Washington Redskins added to their off-season
spending spree Monday when they announced they
had signed flashy star defensive back Deion Sanders to
a seven-year, $55 million pact.
J ust three days after the electrifying defensive back, kick
returner and part-time receiver was cut by the Dallas
Cowboys for salary cup purposes, the eight-time Pro
Bowl selection landed in Washington and was greeted
with an $8 million signing bonus.
“We were very excited when we first heard Deion was
available. We wanted to move on it right away,” said
Redskins owner Daniel Snyder.
“This is something special. Deion is the ultimate weapon
in football,” Snyder added.
“It’s wonderful to be a Redskin,” the 32-year-old Sanders
told reporters at a news conference to announce the
team ’s latest high-profile acquisition. “They’ve always
had something special. There’s nothing like these fans,
this tradition. There’s nothing like Redskins football.”
Already a title contender, the Redskins have been making
bold and expensive moves this off-season that could
turn them into the NFC’s leading Super Bowl candidate.
Washington previously signed four major free agents
— defensive end Bruce Smith, safety Mark Carrier,
quarterback Jeff George and running back Adrian
Murrell.
The Redskins also had two o f the first three picks in the
April draft and took Penn State linebacker LaVar
Arrington and Alabama tackle Chris Samuels.
“W e’ve had some big press conferences here over the
last few months. But none as exciting as this,” Redskins
coach Norv Turner said before recounting the numerous
times he has watched Sanders bum him as an opposing
player.
“I was on the Rams staff (in 1989) when Deion returned
his first punt for a touchdown,” Turner said.
Sanders, the only athlete ever to play in both basebal 1 ’ s
World Series and the Super Bowl, won back-to-back
Super Bowls in 1995 and 1996.
After spending his first five NFL seasons with the
Atlanta Falcons, Sanders won the NFL championship
with the San Francisco49ers following the 1994 season
and repeated with the Dallas Cowboys after the 1995
campaign.

Stanford dunks coach
after track title
A sset UTEftiRESS
Melvin Lister was slumped in a chair, his head bowed, his voice barely audible.
The end o f Arkansas’ eight-year reign as NCAA outdoor track and field
champions hit the star o f the Razorbacks hard.
“We expected to win, that’s the only reason we come to the nationals,” said
Lister, whose victory in the triple jump and part o f a second-place finish in the
1,600-meter relay weren’t good enough to catch new champion Stanford.
“I guess it was meant for them to have this win,” Lister said late Saturday night
at Duke’s Wallace Wade Stadium. “I know I gave it my all. My heart is left on
this track. I have nothing left."
The Cardinal had nothing left to give either, their fabulous distance runners
spent, but heroes of the school’s first outdoor title in 66 years. The team still
had enough energy for a victory lap in the rain and then a dunking o f coach
Vin Lananna in the steeplechase pit.
“Whenever you do anything eight years in a row it’s a heck of a program,”
Lananna said o f Arkansas. “You figure if you spin the w heel so many times
one of them is going to come up right for us.”
Indeed, Stanford was due. The Cardinal finished second five straight times to
the Razorbacks in the indoors and outdoors championships dating to 1997.
“We were working on six consecutive second places in my career. I can’t tell
you how this feels to win," said Stanford's Michael Stember, who finished
second to teammate Gabe Jennings in the 1,500 - the 1 -2 finish that al I but sealed
up Stanford’s title. “This is something we all looked forward to. It is kind of
surreal.”
In races from 800 to 10,000, the Cardinal outscored the runner-up Razorbacks
64-16.
Stanford’s distance runners appeared to thrive o ff a group of rabid Cardinal
fans, who pounded bongo drums and urged the runners on during every lap
The runners seemed to keep pace with every increased beat near the end o f
their races.
