Oregon’s growing Hispanic
community
On M ay 12-13, the O regon Council for Hispanic A dvancem ent (OCH A)
will present its fifteenth annual conference at the O regon C onvention
Center. Latinos: C hanging the Face o f the New M illennium will feature
workshops, keynote addresses and other activities that inform conference
participants about the grow ing im portance o f Hispanic culture and
issues in O regon’s com m unities. T he conference will run on Friday and
Saturday with registration each day at 7 am. and events scheduled
betw een 8 am. and 5 pm. This is the longest running Latino issues
conference in the N orthw est.
The conference will address topics such as expanding Hispanic education,
hot m arketing trends in L atino com m unities, leadership strategies,
healthcare, w ork p lace d iv e rsity and m ore. “O re g o n ’s H ispanic
populations are grow ing at an astonishing rate,” said O C H A Executive
D irector M aria Elena C am pisteguy. “T his conference gives em ployers
and others w orking w ith H ispanic com m unities important inform ation
about the grow ing needs o f this population in addition to key strategies
and interventions for reaching out to Latino groups.”
Special remarks will be given by Portland M ayor V era Katz and Multnomah
County C om m issioner Serena Cruz. Exhibits will be presented by
com m unity groups and O CH A sponsoring partners, and entertainm ent
will be provided by guitarist Anibal Rivera and folkloric dancers Aztecas
del Sol.
O C H A ’s 1999 conference involved 81 businesses and o ver 1,000
individuals. 1,200 participants are anticipated for this year’s conference.

Students w/ ID or Seniors 60+: $55
Social Service A gencies (per person): $95
