Captured as it has been by the “Soft Green” oligarchy of scientists, regulators and lawyers, modem environmentalism does not conserve forests, oceans, lakes and streams - it hastens their destruction. The alternative: a return to Yellowstone and the National Forests, the original environmentalism of Theodore Roosevelt and the conservation movement. Chapter by chapter, Peter Huber takes on the big issues of environmental discourse, from scarcity and pollution to efficiency and waste disposal. Hard Green’s essential arguments: Conservatives should advocate more public property set aside for common use. Many o f the high-tech products liberals condemn are actually good: chemicals like growth hormones make cows more efficient; plastic packaging and preservatives cut down on spoilage; and new furnaces and air conditioners use less energy. Free market capitalism is the only economic system that is effectively green. We will NOT run out of natural resources. Contrary to liberals’ dire warnings, the earth regulates and replenishes itself. Hard Green is a strongly argued critique o f environmentalism from the right. Huber argues that Soft Green environmental policies do exactly the opposite of what they i ntend, and lays out a clear program for a Hard Green (c o n s e rv a tiv e ) approach to the environment.
