The concept o f “computer camp”
paints the picture o f a group o f
students banging away on old beige
computers, programming in some
obscure language. Who would want
to do anything like this? Even worse,
who would send their child to
something like this?
“Y ou've got it all wrong. This is the
cool cam p!” exclaim s Kathryn
Ingram , co-ow ner o f iD Tech
C am ps, the national high-tech
computer camp for kids.
Ingram may be on to something.
Ingram has brought her technology
program to 21 national university
locations in 8 states - one o f them at
Reed College.
“Technology is cool.” Says Ingra.
“W e’ve got a wide range o f young
students who attend our camps.
Some have a ton o f experience.
O thers have never turned on a
c o m p u te r.
T he
com m on
denominator is that technology is
in. It’s cool. It’s here to stay.”
The concept o f “computer camp”
can be intimidating, especially fora
young student with no experience,
but Ingram’s program addresses
this. Upon entering one o f iD ’s labs,
filled with brightly colored iMacs,
neatly arranged PCs, scanners and
DV c a m e ra s and e n e rg e tic
instructors, students feel safe and
secure.
“1 went to soccer camp last week.
Now I’m at computer camp. I will
be back at computer camp next
week. I need to add the credits and
some morphed graphics,” says
Aaron Cimino, 12. You can’t
blame him. Aaron is shooting
footage for his very own digital
movie. Tomorrow, he’ll be taking
the footage and editing it using
Apple Computer’s Final Cut Pro.
At the end o f the week, he will
have integrated rock music and
animated graphics into the project,
and will take it home to share with
his parents and friends.
iD Tech Camps teaches digital
v id e o and m o v ie m aking,
m u ltim e d ia and 3D A rts,
programming and virtual reality,
and in te rn e t w eb -au th o rin g .
“W e're teaching the latest in
technology. Kids are so fun to
watch. They absorb everything so
quickly, and have so much fun
doing it. They have no idea how
much they are learning,” says
Ingram.
Students and Parents aren’t the
only ones who are excited about
iD Tech Camps. High-Tech icons
such as Apple Computer, Intel,
Kids can join a computer camp this sum m er at Reed College through iD Tech to learn digital video and
movie making, multimedia, internet web-authoring and other cool skills.
Cisco, Macromedia, and Iomega
support the program.
“ I t’s a w in -w in situ a tio n for
everyone,” says Ingram. “W e’re
educating the future. W e’re building
self-esteem . W e’re providing a
valuable sum m er program for
parents and students. And, w e’re
having fun doing it.”
