What the “lost books’ o f the Bible?
Sounds like one o f those phony
theories about secret revelations or
church cover-ups that occasionally
make a little money for a certain type
o f religious-book writer.
But the concept was discussed not
long ago in Bible Review, a perfectly
respectable magazine published in
Washington, D.C., by a writer w ho’s
no sensationalist Duane Christensen
teaches Bible and ancient history at
W illiam C arey In te rn a tio n a l
University in Pasadena, Calif., and is

Deuteronomy.
What Christensen refers to are ancient
Israelite books that are long since
lost but which we know existed
because they are mentioned in the
Bible. These writings are a mysterious
scriptural sidelight.
Christensen lists 54 biblical passages
that cite 20 different titles o f lost
books. But scholars think many o f
these title s are d uplicates. For
instance, the “Chronicles o f the Kings
o f Judah,” mentioned 15 times, and
the “Chronicles o f the Kings o f
Israel,” mentioned 18 times, are most
likely references to different sections
o f the same work.
It’s also likely that several different
names were used for the same work.
And some o f the "books” might
actually have been mere lists o f
names, for instance the “Book o f the
Chronicles” that recorded the Levites
(Nehemiah 12:23).
M aking allow ance for all that,
Christensen thinks only two o f the 20
titles clearly referred to important lost
literary works: the “Book o f Jashar”
and the “Book o f the W ars o f
Yahweh.”
An ambiguous reference to the “Book
o f the Upright One,” which occurs in
1 kings 8:12-13 as read in Catholic and
Orthodox churches, but not Jewish
and Protestant Bibles, is probably a
third citation o f Jashar.

Promise is reminiscent o f G od’s
promise to the faithful, as expressed
in “No Good Thing:. It reminds us
that God is “Bigger” than any problem

B2K: Prophetic Songs o f Promise is
undeniably gospel with an urban
flavor. FormerTemptation, Ali (Ollie)

testimony, “Still Encouraged”. The
young praise warriors will be attracted
