James Canfield’s First New Dance Work of the Millennium

Oregon Ballet T heater’s (OBT)
“Dance Near the Edge” program
will feature the world premiere o f
Artistic Director James Canfield’s
first new d an ce w ork o f th e
m illennium . Illum inations, and
Portland-based choreographer Trey
M c In ty re ’s p e rc u s s io n -la c e d
Curupira. As a special treat to
audiences, OBT will showcase the
.. talents oftw o nationally recognized
female student^from The School o f
Oregon Ballet Theatre, who will
each be partnered by a male member
o f the professional company in a
different classical pas de deux.
“Dance Near the Edge” will be
performed through March 11 at the
Portland Civic Auditorium.
James Canfield’s dynamic world-
premiere ballet. Illuminations, is
set to a collection o f contemporary
dance recordings - including Peace
Orchestra, Uncerworld, Malcolm
M cL aren , T e rre T h a e m litz ,
Thievery Corporation and Strange
Voices - juxtaposed throughout the
work with excerpts from Johann
Sebastian Bach’s Chaconne from
the "violin partita No. 2 in D
minor, " performed live by Portland
violinist Aaron Meyer. Alternately
edgy,

llluninations is em bodied by a
subtle and abstract spiritual theme
and explores the nature o f personal
relationships and human emotions.
Through Canfield’s exquisite and
renowned use o f the pas de deux -
as w ell as solo and ensem ble
passages - he illu m in ates the
individual and group talents o f the
company dancers. Illuminations is
made possible in part by a generous
g ift from C in d y and D uncan
Campbell.
