Roots o f Ancient Mysticism and
Modem Psychology
By Bettye Collier-Thomas
Jossey Bass; 1998
By Edward Bruce Bynum
Teachers College Press; 1999
In this bold, humanistic view o f history,
archaeology, genetics, and the biospiritual
roots o f religion and science, Edward Bruce
Bynum offers a radically new vision o f the
collective unconscious in its daily and
historical operations. He goes beyond
tra d itio n a l “ E astern ” and “ W estern”
perspectives and presents a powerful African
vision o f the human species from our earliest
days to contemporary times. This brilliant
and provocative synthesis o f both modem
and ancient science and the great enduring
spiritual traditions provides a vision for the
new millennium.

Daughters o f Thunder brings together the
voices o f fourteen black women preachers
along with historical and biographical
information that places them in the context of
their times. Spanning the days o f slavery on
through the long struggle to gain the most
basic ofcivil rights, these remarkable women
delivered messages o f hope and faith that cut
to the heart and moved their followers. The
women represented here include figures
known to scholars and women who have gone
u n n o ticed d e sp ite th e ir great im pact.
Encompassing themes ranging from racial
and gender discrimination in the church and
society to the tenets o f their shared theology,
their sermons reveal women o f great faith,
courage, and wisdom.
