Lewis free on $ 1 million bond after two weeks in jail
A ssociated P ress
Surrounded by deputies, a sm iling
Ray Lewis left jail on $ 1 million bond
Tuesday, slipped into a car and rode
aw ay with his lawyers, m other and
fiancee.
“Thank G od to be out!” said the
Baltim ore R avens’ linebacker, w ho
was w earing a brown football jersey
with the word “Supreme” on the back.
Lew is is free for the first tim e since
Jan. 31, when he was charged with
murdering two men aftera Super Bowl
party earlier that day.
His lawyer, Ed G arland, said Lewis
felt sym pathy for the families o f the
two men w ho w ere killed and looked
forward to clearing his name.
L ew is’ m other sat in the back seat, a
copy o f “The Inspirational Study
Bible” on her lap. L ew is’ fiancee sat
with two young boys on her lap beside
his mother.
Lewis will spend tim e with his family
in A tlanta and then return hom e to
Baltimore W ednesday, Garland said.
The release on bond was “step one”
for Lewis, Garland said.
"The next step is to get him acquitted,”
he said. “ 1 never expect him to set foot
in a jail again, unless it’s to do
charitable work.”
About 90 m inutes before Lewis left
thejail, another defendant, Reginald
Oakley, arrived with his lawyer to
surrender.
A third suspect, Joseph Sweeting,
surrendered M onday.
Lewis, 24, and his tw o com panions
are charged w ith m u rd er in the
stabbing deaths o f tw o men during a
brawl outside an Atlanta nightclub.
Lewis, Sweeting, 34, o f M iam i, and
Oakley, 31, ofBaltimore, were indicted
Friday in the deaths o f Richard Lollar,
24, and Jacinth Baker, 21, w ho were
stabbed during the 4 a.m. fight.

The A ll-Star gam e was all about the

The W estern Conference has now
won the m ost recent NBA title (San

battle.
However, true conference superiority
(as far as oddsm akers and gamblers
are concerned) is in head-to-head

C onference held a 138- 113 SU

Dallas Cowboys coach Tom Landry watches the instant replav screen at
Texas Stadium in Irving, Texas, during game against the Philadelphia
Eagles in this Dec. / 988 photo. Tom Landry, the Dallas Cowboys coach
who led America s Team to five Super Bowls and was famous fo r pacing
the sidelines fo r three decades wearing a stone face, business suit and felt
hat, died Saturday. Feb. 12, 2000. He was 75.
A ssociated P ress
From Tom Landry E lem entary School in a Dallas suburb to Tom Landry
Stadium in his South Texas hom etow n, the form er C ow boys coach received
m any lasting tributes during his life.
H is death has fans clam oring for more.
Since Landry died Saturday o f leukem ia, the buzz around the area has been
about m aking som e grand public gesture to honor his mem ory.
T he most popular, sym bolic ideas include changing the nam eo fT ex as Stadium
to Landry Stadium and-or attaching L andry’s nam e to part o f Central
Expressw ay, a state highw ay that runs through the heart o f Dallas.
A lthough Cow boys ow ner Jerry Jones ow ns the lease to T exas Stadium , the
building itself is ow ned by the city o f Irving. T he city council had taken no
action as o f T uesday and the C ow boys w ere keeping quiet about their plans.
“ W e are still in the process o f form ulating plans to honor coach Landry,” team
spokesm an Rich D alrym ple said. “T hey will be announced at a later tim e.”
Central is the part o f state highw ay 75 that runs north-south through Dallas
along the east side o f dow ntow n. T he te am ’s original headquarters faced the
highw ay, so Landry used to drive it to w ork nearly every day.
T he nam e could be changed at the city level o r state level. W hoever m akes the
change w ould have to pay for it.
Renam ing Central would cost more than sim ply adding Landry’s nam e to a road
know n only by a num ber. T h at’s w hy Linden Burgess, the D allas-based
m anager o f traffic operations for the state highw ay departm ent, thinks the
gesture w ould be better applied to the section o f Interstate 30 that connects
D allas and Fort W orth.

C L E V E L A N D (A P) - Instead o f one
Tara Lipinski to push M ichelle Kwan,
there were two. And push they did.
But Sasha C ohen and Sarah Hughes
sim ply did n ’t have the clout with the
judges to pull o ff w hat Lipinski did in
the 1998 Olympics.
“ I d o n ’t think I w ould have won ...
because M ichelle is a world and
Olympic skater and very well known,”
C ohen said. “She has a reputation
w hich I d o n ’t have.”
That reputation m ight have saved
Kwan.
Skatingcautiously and with little fire,
never connecting w ith the audience,
Kwan still won her third straight U.S.
Figure Skating Championships crown
Saturday night.
She should thank som e generous
judges for helping her stave o ff the
w ave o f young Americans.
“ I really feel I have to up the ante,”
said K wan, who w ore her hair back
Saturday night “to look younger.
“ It’s, I think, my seventh nationals
and I feel ancient next to these
people.”
Whi le the four-tim e champion skated
tentatively and fell once in the free
skate, her main competition -1 5-year-
old C ohen and 14-year-old Hughes -
also had falls. But their perform ances
w eren ’t as uninspired as K w an’s.
1 hey sim ply d o n ’t have the resum es
quite yet. A nd Kwan, the O lym pic
silver m edalist w ho has won m ore
U.S. cham pionships than the likes o f
Kristi Yamaguchi, Rosalynn Sumners
and D orothy Hamill, certainly does.
“ I knew I w anted to go out and feel
good about m yself after the program ,”
said Kwan, 19, w ho also has won two
w orld titles. “ I d id n ’t w ant any pity.”
Instead, she got charity, not only
from the judges, eight o f whom placed
her first - H ughes got the other top
spot - but from her com petition.
