CONTRI BCTE U STORV The first Bill Schonely Humanitarian Award from the National Kidney Foundation ofOregon& Washington (NKF-OW) was presented to Oregon S ym p h o n y C o n d u c to r Jam es DePreist. Theceremony took place at the Blazer game on Wednesday, February 9, 2000 at the Rose Garden. This is the first presentation o f the award presented by Bill Schonely w ith the NKF-OW to honor an outstanding individual w ho has helped on a special program or project o f the Foundation. “Bill Schonely has been a terrific supporter o f the National Kidney Foundation over the years,’’ said Executive Director Fred Bachofner. “We honor his participation with us by dedicating an award that he can present to other individuals who have stepped forward to help in the fight against kidney disease.’’ James DePreist, who himself suffers from kidney disease and currently received dialysis treatments, came to the assistance o f a family in crisis during the past holiday season. He heard about a young boy who has been on dialysis since birth that lost his father to a sudden death just before Christmas. The mother has four other children, in addition to the almost daily visits to OHSU for dialysis treatments o f her 2-1/2 year old son. Mr. DePreist donated funds and enlisted support from the Oregon Symphony members to help this family through an emotionally and fin a n c ia lly d iffic u lt p erio d . Emergency financial assistance is one o f the many services that the National K id n ey F o u n d atio n p ro v id es individuals and their families with kidney disease. “ Mr. DePreist cam e forward, unasked, to offer his support,” said NKF-OW board president Margaret Allee. “It’s people like Mr. DePreist that this Humanitarian Award plans to honor. It’s b ecau se o f Bill Schonely’s example o f voluntary service that the Humanitarian Award is named.
