New comedy Cenizas performs at El Centro Milagro

surrealist Chicano-style musical that
follows the story o f Zaida, Latina
dancer, and David, a professional
smoker.

Milagro for 2 performances only;
Friday and Saturday March 17 and 18
at 8 pm.

The troupe recently returned from a
successful tour o f California and
Nevada and will be traveling through
W ashington, Montana and Idaho
this spring.

The geniuses behind this production
are Rebecca Martinez, playwright,
R odolfo O rtega, com poser and
Michael Menger, director.
Martinez is known for her sensitive
portrayal o f breast cancer in Fortuna
de la Pida.
Ortega has been creating original
music for Teatro Milagro productions
for over five years.
This is Menger’s third production
with Miracle, he last directed The
True H istory o f Coca Cola in
Mexico, and last season, the award
winning Deporting the Divas by
Guillermo Reyes.
Two talented Latinos, jack Lozano
and Ruben Fonseca, bring their
bilingual singing and acting skills to
the production.
Company Artistic Director, Danielle
Malan, plays several comical roles.
Rebecca Martinez plays the lead role

Madrid - El Ministerio de justicia
británico anunció que hoy martes,
después de las dos de la tarde, hora
local (nueve de la mañana en el Perú),
el c o rre sp o n d ie n te T rib u n a l
Divisional de la Roya) HightCourtde
Londres emitirá su veredicto sobre la
ap elació n p resen tad a c o n tra la
probable liberación del general
Augusto Pinochet.
Concretamente, los tres jueces del
T riu b u n a l D iv isio n a l, b ajo la
presidencia del magistrado Simón
Brown, dirán si consideran que el
ministro del Interior británico, Jack
Straw, actúa conforme a derecho al
haber anunciado su intención de
liberara Pinochet porque lasaluddel
ex dictador es precaria, decisión
adoptadas partir de un informe médico
que el ministro mantiene en secreto.
Este informe fue resultado de los
exámenes hechos a Pinochet el 5 de
enero por tres médicos, que, según
anuncióelMinisteriodelInteriorel 11
de enero, permiten concluir “de
manera inequívoca y unáime” que la
' f
salud del ex dictador le impediría
afrontar un juicio.
Bélgica (uno de los cuatro países
eu ropeos que ha so lic ita d o la
extradición de Pinochet) y seis
organizaciones de defensa de los
derechos humanos, encabezadas por
Amnistía Internacional, recurrieron
la anunciada decisión de Straw
argumentando que era ilegal que no
se facilitara una copia del informe
médico a la acusación.
La semana anterior, el mismo tribunal
que decidirá el caso sentenció que
los recurrentes tenían derecho a apelar
la d e te rm in a c ió n de S traw ,
enmendando la plana a otro juez de la
mismaRoyalHigthCourtqueel31 de
enero negó a la acusación su derecho
a apelar. La semana anterior se
anunció que el fallo se emitiría el
jueves 17. Al parecer, informaciones
contradictorias sobre la salud del
ex dictador han motivado el adelanto
de la vista.
Pinochet se encuentra bajo arresto
domiciliario en Londres desde hace
16 meses acusado de genocidio y
to rtu ra s, delitos cometidos durante
ladictadura militar que lideró en Chile
(1973-1990). El ministro del Interior
británico accedió a extraditarlo a
España, pero luego dio marcha atrás
porque la defensa apeló.
La sentencia de hoy puede indicar
que Straw actuó correctamente, en
cuyo caso el ministro tendrá vía libre
para liberar al ex dictador. Otra opción
es que dictamine la divulgación del
inform e m édico, y una tercera
alternativa es que disponga que otras
a c tu a c io n e s del p ro c e so son
erróneas.
Teatro Milagro receives several
grants for A Su Salud! program
Teatro Milagro has received several grants in the last two
months to support the touring o f two health message
plays for the A Su Salud! (To Your Health!) Program.
Cenizas, a musical comedy with a no-smoking message,
is touring through November o f 2000 with support from
The Allen Foundaiton for the Arts, Northwest Health
F o u n d atio n , P G E -E nron F o u n d atio n , T em pleton
Foundation, Fred Meyer Foundaaiton and AT&T Cable
Services. Fortuna de la Pida, a bilingual breast cancer
awareness play will be launched for its third tour with 15
performances in June and July o f 2000, with support from
the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.
The Allen Foundation for the Arts gave the most recent
award o f $10,000 to support the tour o f Cenizas through
December o f 2000. The Allen Foundation for the Arts is
dedicated to promoting the creative arts in the Pacific
Northwest. The foundation is chartered to support projects
and organizations that advance the visual, performing,
and literary arts; feature local, regional and national artists
in a variety o f disciplines; and encourage public
participation and the promotion o f critical thinking.
The Northwest Health Foundaiton awarded Teatro Milagro
with $ 15,000 to tour throughout Oregon with Cenizas and
conduct BRIDGES residencies with students in rural
communities. The Northwest Health Foundation was
founded in 1997 and is committed to advancing, supporting
and promoting the health o f the people o f Oregon and
Southwest Washington.
PG E- Enron Foundation also awarded Teatro M i lagro with
a $ 15,000 grant for the tour o f Cenizas in Oregon. The PGE-
Enron Foundation seeks out and funds programs that
serve and enrich Oregon by promoting health, livability
and educational opportunities for its citizens.
The Herbert A. Templeton Foundation awarded Teatro
Milagro with $8,000 to tour Cenizas through Oregon and
present BRIDGES Residencies. The Herbert A. Templeton
Foundation endeavors to remain responsive to changing
conditions and emerging and critical needs. The trustees
feel a strong commitment to strengthening the quality o f
life for the total community with special emphasis on
giving support to youth.
The Fred Meyer Foundation awarded Teatro Milalgro
with $6,250 to conduct a BRI DGES Residency o f Cenizas
in Phoenix, Oregon. The Milagro actors rehearsed with
teens for three days and then involved the students in the
final performance o f the play. Additionally, during the
Residency, the actors visited area schools.
The performance on Saturday, January 29,h was a success
with over 300 audience members. The Fred Meyer
F ou n d atio n supports org an izatio n s th at provide
programming to help children, strengthen families and
build better communities.
AT&T Cable Services awarded Teatro Milagro with a
$ 1,000 cash award and in-kind video and editing service
o f Cenizas. Additionally, a public service announcement
ofthe no-smoking musical will air on AT&T Cable channels.
AT&T believes that artistic creativity is a complex and
important form o f communication, and to that end, they
support innovative artistic projects by nationally and
internationally recognized arts and culture institutions.

incendiados por guerrilleros del ELN en la

La Paz ratifica reivindicación
marítima
La Paz (AP) - El Gobierno ratificó su

de un guerra con Chile.
