D E TR O IT - Jury selection begins in one o f the first
trials in a death related to the so-called "date-rape
drug.” Four men are accused o f m anslaughter in the
death o f 15-year-old Sam antha Reid, and authorities
say the men spiked the g irl’s soft drink w ith a fatal
dose o f the drug know n as G H B. Pol ice say Sam antha
w as one o f three girls w ho unknow ingly ingested the
drug at a party. G H B has no odor or taste, and ju st
a few drops can m ake som eone pass out w ithin 20
minutes. T he drug is legal in 30 states and is used by
body builders as a steroid.
Rescuers Search for Crash

helicopters above, rescuers in boats scoured the
w aters for survivors o fa K enya A irways jetlin er that
crashed into the Atlantic O cean. At least 10 people
survived. By late m orning, 86 bodies had been
brought to shore, rescue w orkers said. T he cold
ocean tem peratures m ade it unlikely anyone could
be alive after a few hours, officials said. The Airbus
310 w as on its w ay to N igeria w ith 179 people on
board.

Thwaits is a w hite male, 5 ’ 11,165 lbs., with long brown hair
and a m ustache.
The first incident occurred on January 7, 2000, at
approximately 9:45 p.m ., when a 20 year-old woman accepted
a ride from T hw aits in the area o f S. E. 122nd A venue / Stark
Street. T hw aits drove the victim to a secluded area in
Southeast Portland w here he sexually assaulted her.
T he second incident occurred on January 20, 2000, at
approx imately 5:30p.m ., when another 20 year-old woman
accepted a ride from Thw aits in the areaofN .E . 82nd Avenue
/ Pacific Street Thw aits again drove the victim to a secluded
area, in N ortheast Portland w here he sexually assaulted
her. In both cases T hw aits displayed a w eapon.
T hw aits has been charged in the first case w ith K idnap I,
Sodom y I, Unlawful Sexual Penetration I, Sex A buse I, and
U nlaw ful U se o f a W eapon. In the second case he was
charged with Rape I, Sodom y I, Sex A buse I, Unlawful
Sexual Penetration I, and U nlaw ful use o f a W eapon.
T hw aits was lodged at M ultnom ah County Detention
C enter and w as arraigned on Friday, January 28"'.

year old girls, K ara Leas and Jennifer
Esson, left a hom e in the A gate Beach
area north o f N ew port O regon, and
w alked east tow ard H ighw ay 101 to
hitchhike. On W ednesday, February
15,1995, the bodies ofboth girls were
found in a rem ote w ooded area to the
east o f H ighw ay 101, several m iles
from w here they w ere last seen alive.
Investigators are looking into the
possibility that the person or persons
responsible may have approached
and contacted other fem ales w hile
hitchhiking or w alking in the area in
1994 or 1995. These contacts m ost

safely travel in space, although N A SA has no
im m ediate plans to duplicate the space shuttle
mission that made 77-made-old John Glenn the world s
oldest astronaut, space agency scientists said. During
a nine-day trip into space in 1998, G lenn served as a
guinea pig to see w hat effect zero gravity has on
older people. N A SA scientists did n ’t release test
results - G lenn planned to discuss them this
afternoon - but said they w ere pleased with w hat

HIV Cases in Japan Hit
Record
TO K Y O - T he num ber o f people in Japan testing
positive for HIV or developing AIDS in 1999 reached
a record high o f 780, the Health and W elfare Ministry
said. A total o f 491 people tested positive for HIV, the
virus that causes AIDS, in 1999, up 16 percent from
1998, the m inistry said. T he report also said that the
num ber o f people tested for HIV and AIDS in 1999
dropped to 4 8 ,2 18. Down 5,000 from 1998.

Commission. The seven-member committee was
established to enhance the city by m anaging

Com m ittee. The Project Review C om m ittee is a
nine-m em ber citizens group appointed by City
C ouncil to review plans for building and
re m o d e lin g in V a n c o u v e r ’s d o w n to w n ,
