The cam pus BSU is sponsoring
m any o f O S U ’s B lack H istory
M onth events, and all events are
free and open to the publ ic, he added.

Among the highlights o f the m onth
is a lecture, “T he African Presence
in Early A merica: A Response to
A cadem ic Racism ,” by Ivan V an
S e rtim a , p ro fe s s o r o f A fric a n
A m e ric a n S tu d ie s at R u tg e rs
U n iv e r s ity an d a lso v is itin g
professor at Princeton University.
Van Sertim a’s talk starts at 7 p.m.
on Friday, Feb. 4 in O SU ’s LaSells
Center. Van Sertim a was bom in
G uyana, South America. He w as
educated at the school o f O riental
an d A fric a n S tu d ie s (L o n d o n
U n iv e r s ity ) a n d th e R u g te rs
G raduate School and holds degrees
in African studies ad anthropology.
He is the editor o f the Journal o f
A frican C ivilizations, w hich he
founded in 1973, and has published
se v e ra l
m a jo r
a n th o lo g ie s
influencing developm ent o f a new
U.S. m ulticultural curriculum .
