Hospitals overwhelmed by flu victims
A ssociated P atss
W e’ve survived the Y 2K bug ..only
to be attacked by the flu bug. Flu
season took hold in earnest over the
holidays. " Influenza ac tiv ity is
picking up in m ost parts o f the
country,” says Keiji Fukuda o f the
C enter for D isease Control.
Doctors all over the U S. agree and
e m e rg e n c y ro o m s a r e b e in g
sw am ped. Dr. Stephen Lynn o f St.
L uke’s Roosevelt Hospital in New
York City has seen hundreds o f flu
cases ju s t in th e last few days.
’’Some years are good flu years. Others
are bad. T h is y ear seem s to be
p a r tic u la r ly

Som e parts o f the country are faring
w orse than others. H ospitals in New
Y ork, A tlanta and Los A ngeles are
r e p o r tin g a s u r g e in c a s e s .
Dr. Susan S tangloftheU C L A Family
H ealth C enter says that surge has
com e little earlier than usual. “ We*
tend to see m ore flu in January and
February but w e're definitely seeing
a lot o f people, probably a tw enty to
thirty percent increase over last year.”
Sym ptom s include cough, headache
and a high fever that w o n ’t subside.
Even the new anti-flu drugs on the
market w o n ’t help ifyou wait too long
P o r tla n d _________
to see a doctor.
"For three or four days I’ve been
sick,” says flu victim Shirley Pistor. “I
could practically not get out o f bed.”
The good new s is that this flu is a
known enem y, influenza A, and the
flu shot is still up to 90-percent
effective against it. But doctors admit
at this tim e o f year there are so many
other viruses out there it may be
im possible to avoid them all.
