“The Courage to Love” depicts
a tum ultous tim e in Am erican
history, an era before the Civil War
in New Orleans when the French
outnumbered the Americans, and
when free people o f color enjoyed
many privileges o f white society.
During a lavish gala called the
"Quadroon Ball,” wealthy French
and Spanish men coupled with
young women from multi-racial
backgrounds. Although the inter
racial couples entered into a socially
accepted co u rtsh ip and ra ise d
fa m ilie s to g e th e r, th e y w ere
forbidden to marry.
Set in 19th ce n tu ry New
Orleans during a period o f rel igious
and political unrest, “The Courage
to Love” tells the heroic life story
o f H enriette D elille (V anessa
Williams), a woman o f color who
rejects the hypocrisy o f class, race
and tradition.
As racial and political tensions
from the North and South infiltrate
the iso la te d N ew O rlean s
community, H enriette’s mother,
P oup o n n e (D ia h a n n C a rro ll),
worries about her daughter and
warns her not to resist tradition.
Pouponne urges her to participate
in the “Quadroon Ball” to ensure
that she w ill be p rovided for
financially in the uncertain future.
Instead, Henriette turns to the
Church to teach and to care for the
poor and needy. She becomes one
o f the first women o f color to take
an active part in the day-to-day
ac tiv itie s; h o w ev er, she feels
frustrated by the politics and racism
from both the Church’s hierarchy
and the wealthy patrons o f the
parish.
Henriette Delille is the founder
ofthe Sisters o f the Holy Family, an
in te rn a tio n a l o rd e r o f nuns
dedicated to serving the poor and
elderly. Her devotion and life’swork
continues to provide inspiration. In
1989, she became the first woman
