Slider, jr. and Frankie B. Slider in Austin, Texas. She was the youngest daughter o f fourchildren and shared a special bond while growing up with her sister Louise and two brothers, Ralph & Jim. Tom and Frankie moved to Vancouver, W ashington with their four small children in 1942. She grew up in Vancouver and made lots o f friends w h ile a tte n d in g L ie se r R oad E le m e n ta ry S c h o o l an d F o rt Vancouver, High School. The Slider children were raised together in a home filled with love and respect for the Lord, lots o f love and good god. She met and married Ronald Stevens in 1959 and from theirunion were bom two daughters. Stephanie Antoinette and Carmen Rochelle. Tommie was a licensed cosmetologist and owned her own beauty salon and wig boutique in Northeast Portland. She had an outstanding reputation for flair an d creativity as a hairstylist. Later Tektronix Company employed her as an assembly technician for 15 years and retired in 1982. She was a gifted self-taught seamstress and florist. After retirement she channeled her time and energies to becoming a certified Foster Grandparent with the Casey Family Program, volunteering with the Albinas Ministerial Alliance, Urban League Grandparent Support Group, Sisters Network for Breast Cancer Survivors, and the United Negro College Fund. Tommie also served as an officer on the board ofDirectors for the National Council o f Negro W omen - Tri county Chapter. She loved the Lord and was a faithful member o f Allen Temple CME Church. “T ”, as she was lovingly called was an excellent cook and everyone loved her unique preparation o f oriental cuisine. Those who knew Tom m ie found her to be loving, kindhearted and always willing to help someone else. She truly loved her family and friends. Her warm personality was like a ray o f su n sh in e and she w as a lw ay s beautifully dressed. You could always find her smiling with outstretched arms to welcome you with a hug and a kiss. Tommie loved life with a passion and found joy in the small things— Sunday fam ily d in n e rs; fam ily p ic n ic s; barbecuing in the backyard; a warm fire in the fireplace; and always support ofyounger family member participation in sporting events. Her favorite place o f comfort was spending time near the water and she enjoyed going to the Oregon Coast. She welcomed many into her lovely home that was always filled with beautiful flowers, good food and music. Even as the sunset o f Tom m ie’s life neared, she knew that the Lord had blessed her to overcome many challenges and she continued to Give God the Glory. She knew that she was a child o f God, who allowed her to be ablessing to her family and friends. Tommie will always be remembered in the hearts ofher sister, Louise M. Burton; brother, Ralph B. Slider and James T. Slider, daughters, Stephanie A. Stevens, Carmen R. Stevens and Joyce Love; sister-in-law, Anna Slider; grandchildren, Michoun V. Steven, Misha and Rachel Slider, Shaquita Love, Robert Mosely, jr; granddaughter-in-law, Agnes Stevens; great-grandchildren, D avante and M arquis Stevens; nieces, Kimberly R. Davis, Michelle M. Harper, Kimberly N. Davis; nephews, Jayvin R. Harper and James Davis, aunts, uncles, cousins and a host o f friends. that children’s needs come first. Lenord I The start o f a new year can be especially stressful for stepfamilies, children as well as adults. “This is a time when stepparents often are on an em o tio n a l rollercoaster, feeling guilt, pain, anger and nostalgia,” says Colleen Lewis, director ofFamily Therapy at William Temple House in northwest Portland. “The holidays bring back memories, both good and bad, o f how things used to be before the separation or divorce.” Ms. Lewis and other counselors at William Temple House work with in d iv id u a ls and fam ilies from Washington, Clackamas, Multnomah and Clark counties, providing over 9,000 hours o f service at no cost in 1999. “Children are like sponges, they absorb everything, so if youngsters are acting out, it’s a symptom of something going on in the family - usually how the parents are treating one another,” observes Ms. Lewis. “That’s when the parents should see a counselor and seek help.” The free counseling service at William Temple House offers adults help and guidance in working through their relationship problem s and recognizing the consequences for their children. “Divorce is an adult decision, not a child’s,” Ms. Lewis emphasizes. “Children don’t have a choice about the divorce, so they need to know they are not the cause. She worked as a Domestic W orker and belonged to Vancouver Avenue First Baptist Church, and a former member o f Enterprise Chapter#! O.E.S. Annie married W alter Lenord on April 4, 1955. Walter preceded her in death on June 3,1995, Annie had a sister Charlotte whom also preceded her in death. Annie B.
