At year’s end, Davenport counts her net gains

Lindsay Davenport prefers to leave the spotlight to
others. All she does is win.
“Ifpeople want to think I’m boring, that’s fine,” Davenport
said. “It’s not going to change if I’m ranked two or one or
three in the world,” she said. “It’s not going to change my
enjoyment. That’s the way it is.”
She won tournaments the last two weeks o f the season,
including the $2 million Chase Championships o f the
WTA Tour on Sunday, the year-closing, 16-player event
at Madison Square Garden.
“I’m just a pretty quiet person and don’t want a lot o f
fanfare anyway,’ ’ said Davenport.
She has beaten Martina Hingis all three times they played
in 1999, including the finals the last two Sundays.
For winning the Chase, Davenport received the B i Hie Jean
KingTrophy and $500,000.
“That was like her best match against me,” said Hingis,
who remains No. 1. “I didn’t really have that many
opportunities because she served very well and even the
groundstrokes were just very deep and it’s hard to do
something out o f them.”
Against Hingis — a master at changing speeds, directions
and tactics — Davenport used her power to control the
points. She would pound her serve or boom groundstrokes.
“I’m going to make errors in my game at some points in
matches because I go for it a lot,” Davenport said.
