The findings were to be presented today in Chicago at a conference o f the A m erican C ollege o f C hest Physicians. The lead researcher, Dr. C laudia Henschke ofC om ell University, said a few recent studies also suggested w omen smokers run a higher risk o f lung cancer than men. B aylor C o lle g e o f M ed icin e H o u sto n , Texas Fifteen years ago I gave up ciga rettes d u rin g the G reat A m erican Smokeout— an annual American Can cer Society event to encourage sm ok ers to becom e ex-smokers. It w asn ’t an easy thing to do. I had sm oked my w ay through college and graduate school and kept saying I would quit “one o f these days.” My target dates for quitting kept getting postponed. “I ’ll quit when I get pregnant" or “ I’ll quit when I move into a new house” were reasons tied to events that seem ed com fortably far away. But at age 30, without children and still living in an apartment, I heard about the G reat Am erican Smokeout and asked myself, “W hy am 1 w ait ing?" First, I told all my friends about my decision to stop smoking. This en abled them to offer moral support and distractions. To satisfy the craving for that com forting feel o f a cigarette in my mouth, 1 chomped on carrot and celery sticks and sucked on sugar- free candies. Fearing the w eight gain that many form er sm okers com plain about, I started to exercise m ore. The w eight gain is not ju st due to eating more; the elim in atio n o f n ic o tin e slow s down the body’s m etabolic rate. Stay ing active is the best way to com pen sate. I also drank lots o f water to flush out the toxins that had accum ulated from so many years o f smoking. D esp ite all th e se h elp fu l te c h niques, the first few months were hard. It would have been so easy to give in to tem ptation, but I rem ained deter m ined and took it one hour at a time. That turned in to one day at a time, and all o f a sudden, I had been an ex sm oker for m ore than a decade. T h is y e a r ’s G re a t A m e ric a n Sm okeout is Nov. 18. I urge you to take advantage o f a great opportunity to m ake your life a lot healthier. Lung cancer is the No. 1 cause o f cancer death in women. Smoking also increases your risk o f heart disease, osteoporosis and skin dam age. For pregnant wom en, it raises the risk o f h a v in g a m is c a rr ia g e o r a lo w - birthw eight child. Q uitting has other benefits as well: clothes that d o n ’t smell like sm oke, whiter teeth, fewer wrinkles, no early- m orning sm o k e r’s cough, no h u d dling outside in the sm oker’s section, and cigarette money that can be spent on rew arding yourself. You’ll also be setting an exam ple for your children, who develop behaviors by w atching, not listening, to you. I know w hat it’s like to be in your shoes, and on Nov. 18, my thoughts and good w ishes w ill be there for those o f you w ho have com m itted to changing your life for the better. The ACIP did not recom m end that vaccination be required for college students, according to Jennifer Kelly, adult im m unization coordinator at the O regon H ealth Division. “M eningococcal vaccine is safe and the vaccine costs about $75. Based in the A C IP ’s m odification, we are advising those who provide m edical care to freshman college student to discuss m eningococcal disease and the benefits and availability o f the vaccine w ith them and with their parent,” Kelly said. The m eningococcal vaccine provides 50 to 75 percent protection against serogroup B disease, w hich accounts for tw o-thirds o f cases in Oregon.
