lavish palace. At the Czar’s Palace,
they are entertained by dancers from
the Maryinsky Theatre in splendid
divertissm ent (a collectio n o f
dances), performed by Spanish,
Arabian, Chinese, and Russian
dancers, as well as by an 8-foot tall
pastry c h e f and his cad re o f
gymnastic candies. Michael Curry,
co-designer o f the Broadway hit
The Lion King and a member o f the
design team for the o p ening
ceremonies o f the 1996 Olympics
in Atlanta, created the pastry chef
costume for Oregon Ballet Theatre.

Baird, who has also worked with
The Jo ffre y B allet and the
Metropolitan Opera, pays homage
to Tchaikovsky (the 1993 premiere
o f the production m arked the
centennial o f the composer’s death),
drawing inspiration from sources
as d iv e rse as p h o to s o f
Tchaikovsky’s home, to thejeweled
designs o f Faberge eggs. Many of
the characters in the production are i
inspired by figures in Russian 5
history, including the Von M eek*
family, hosts o f the Act One party
scene, who befriended and provided
