During her tenure as Mayor, and believing that the only way to lead is by example, Mrs. Kelly called for every business and individual in Washington, D.C., to return to the ethic of caring and providing for the c ity ’s youth - to become an extended family that assumes full and ac­ tive responsibility for educat­ ing, training, m entoring and employing our Young people. Mrs. Kelly served as Mayor of the ma­ jor urban city. Mrs. Kelly is a native Wash­ ington, who attended District of Columbia public schools. She furthered her education at Howard University. Earning a BA with honors in political science in 1965 and a Juris doctorate from Howard University Law School in 1968. Mrs. Kelly’s professional career includes serving as an instructor at the Antiosh School of Law, Vice-Chair of the D.C. Law Revi­ sion Commission, vice President of the Potomac Electric Power Company, and terms as the Demo­ cratic National Committeewoman from the District of Columbia. Mrs. Kelly has been active in hercom m unityallofherlife. She has been a member of the Legal Aid Society, Howard University Board of Trustees; St. Mary’s Col­ lege Board of Trustees, and the W ashington Bar A ssociation. Mrs. Kelly is a life member of the Alpha Kappa Alpa Sorority, Inc. Among the local and national awards Mrs. Kelly has received- W.E.B Du Bois Ward, presented by the Congressional Black Cau­ cus, the Ebony Magazine Award, the Thurgood Marshall Award of Excellence, and the NAACP Award. Mrs. Kelly has also been bestowed honorary degrees.
