rian and founder o f the philosophy Aes­
thetic Realism, has explained the cause
o f all injustice, including the feet that
children are starving in America: it is

som ething else." Contem pt, he show ed
is at the basis o f o ur profit econom y
w here som e few people get rich from the
labor o f many. A nd in 1970, Eli Siegel
explained this trem endous thing— that

Since the profits are so high, one
w ould think m ost m anufac turers w on Id
be w illing to sacrifice a little o f that
m argin to add som e inexpensi ve safety
devices like trig g er locks that m ight
save the lives o f children w h o find a
w ay to get h o ld o f a gun. B ut v ery few
firearm m anufacturers do o r w ill u n ­
less C ongress passes a law requiring it.

m oney. Itis sad but necessary in today’s
A m erica that our tax m oney m ust be
invested in v ideo cam eras, security
guards, and m etal detectors o u r school
m ust b u y to try to protect o u r children.

throughout the country are returning to
schools w ith autom atically locking
doors, alarm s, and police officers on the
premises. 1 applaud the efforts o f schools
to try to create a safe place for children
to learn. But i f this country w ould wake
up and dem and that our law m akers
decide once and for all to protect chil­
dren instead o f guns, how m uch better
use w eco u ld p u t that m oney to! Schools
need books, com puters, and enough
classroom s and teachers earning decent
salaries to ensure o ur children get the
education they need to succeed in life.
O ne county in M aryland near w here
1 live spent n early $700,000 this fall
ju st to install surveillance cam eras in
its high schools. Is this w hat it’s com e
to in o ur efforts to prevent alm ost 13
children a d ay from b eing k illed by
guns? U nfortunately, the an sw er is yes.
B etw een 1979 and 1996, nearly
75,000 children and teens w ere killed
b y firearms. T h at’s 20,000 m ore than
the num ber o f A m erican battle casual­
ties in the V ietnam W ar. I lived in
W ashington, D C during the Vietnam
W ar and rem em ber the huge and nu­
m erous dem onstrations against the war
that ultim ately forced the U nited States
to reexam ine its priorities. I cannot help
b u t w onder w hy I d o not see dem ons tra
tions in our streets, at the U.S. Capitol,
the W hite H ouse, in our state capitals,
and in every city in A m erica protesting
the feet that U.S. children under age 15
are 12 tim es m ore likely to die from
gunfire than children in 25 other indus­
trialized countries com bined. Black
children under the age o f 15 are tw ice as
likely as W hite children to die o f gun
violence, black youths aged 15-24 are
four times m ore likely than W hite youths,
and Black males in that age group are
ten tim es m ore likely than their W hite
counterparts to be a victim o f firearms.
N early one mil lion Americans have been
killed b y guns since 1968. If anything
else you can think o f w as killing adults
and children at these alarm ing rates, the

port m andatory registration o f hand­
guns as does 85 percent o f the general

Eighty-eight percent o f those surveyed
feel that new handguns sold should be
