LOS AN GELES— Harold “Pee
W ee” Reese, the Hall o f Fame short­
stop o f the Brooklyn Dodgers whose
friendship helped Jackie Robinson
break baseball’s color line, died today
in Louisville, Kentucky. He was 81.
The D odgers announced the death
o f one o f their all-tim e greats but
gave no other details. Reese spent
his entire 16-year career with the
Dodgers, appearing in seven W orld
Series. He played 15 years in B rook­
lyn and follow ed the team to Los
A ngeles for one m ore season before
retiring in 1958.

in the $2.45 million ATPChampionship.

Sam pras has w on 22 consecutive
m atches and four tournam ents, in­
cluding the Queen ’ s Cup, Wimbledon
and Los A ngeles, in the second long­
est streak o f his career. He won 29 in
a row in 1994.

1980s and ju st dominating, she never
looked that happy and I think she really
learned to appreciate the gam e the
older she got and the more she played.
I definitely remember watching her
when I was growing up and she was
always dominating. She has a great
place in the history o f w om en’s tennis.

Sosa meanwhile hit two-run hom ­
ers in each o f his first two at-bats,
giving him 46 overall, but the Chicago
Cubs lost to the St. Louis Cardinals 6-
5. Sosa is now one hom e run behind
M cGwire for the major league lead.
