Before the trade, w hich had been rum ored for a couple
o f weeks, Portland re-signed 20-year-old Jermaine O Neal.
"W e ju st brought two guys to the roster today that are all-
stars," Blazers president and general manager Bob Whitsitt
said. “W e did not have an all-star going into today. But
they 're not worried about their individual stats or awards.
They’ve been there, done that. These guys are playing for
one reason - to try to win an NBA championship.
Schrempf, a three-time all-star, averaged 15.0 points
and 7.4 rebounds last season, both second-highest on the
Sonics, while Smith, who made the 1998 all-star team, has
career averages o f 17.4 points, 3.9 rebounds and 4 1 assists.
