In his latest film, the comedy-adven
ture “Wild Wild West,” Will Smith plays
a character who is, like the actor him ­
self, long on charm and style H e’sjam es
T. West, a special governm ent agent
assigned to protect the president of the
United States (circa 1869) from a bril­
liantly diabolical assassin whose arse­
nal of weapons includes an 80-foot m e­
chanical tarantula. I l was a role that
Smith thoroughly enjoyed.
