W ILM IN G TO N , Del. - W inning
the career G rand Slam turned out to
be a m arathon for Juli Inkster.
O f the eight players w ho have
w on the four m ajor cham pionships
o f their era, no one took as long as
Inkster - 16 years from the tim e she
w on the D inah Shore as a rookie to
her victory in the LPG A C ham pion
ship as a 39-year-old m other.
But, oh, w hat a kick.
In a span o f 21 days, Inkster sepa
rated herself from the pack and took
herplace in history by winning the U.S.
Open and the LPGA Championship.
Her finish at DuPont Country Club
on Sunday was ju st as swift.
In a span o f three holes, she shot
out o f a three-w ay tie for the lead with
a staggering display o f shotm aking
and putting, an eagle-birdie-birdie fin
ish to win by four strokes.
“I can't com prehend this,” she said
after her 6-under 65. “I kept looking
up and the ball was going in the hole.
It’s just been a phenom enal year.”
W hen she w as 23 and playing her
first full season on the LPG A Tour,
Inkster thought w inning the four
m ajors was sim ply a m atter o f time.
It was hard to blam e her for such
confidence.
She w as T iger W oods and Se Ri
Pak rolled into one, the first player to
win three straight U.S. A m ateur titles,
the first professional to w in tw o m a
jors as a rookie.
