graduating senior with honors. She would like to
major in communications and pursue a career in
the Public Relations field. She demonstrates
strong leadership ability and publications. Tif­

continue her interest in communications.

M EX ICO CITY - At least one person was
killed, 200 w ere injured and 12 others were
trapped under rubble in the M exican city o f
Puebla on Tuesday after a pow erful earth­
quake shook the south o f the country, TV
A zteca reported.
The quake, measuring 6.7 on the open-
ended Richter scale, was felt in M exico City,
where panicked office workers ran out o f sway­
ing buildings, but Puebla, 55 miles to the east,
was much nearer the epicenter, officials said.
The quake, w hich occurred at 3:41 p.m.
(4:41 p.m. ED T ), felled a church spire and
dam aged several oth er buildings in the his­
toric center o f Puebla, local m edia reported.
It was also felt strongly in M exico City,
w here Reuters w itnesses said glass windows
shattered and thousands o f panicked office
workers stream ed out onto sidewalks as build­
ings swayed sickemngly.
No serious damage was immediately reported
in the sprawling capital, where at least 10,000
people died in a massive earthquake in 1985.

C enter in G olden, Colorado, also said it
appeared the quake had registered 6.7 on the
open-ended Richter scale.
" W e ’ve upgraded it to a 6.7,” center direc­
tor W averly Person said. The center earlier
estimated it at just over 6.5 on the Richter scale.
A magnitude above 6 can cause severe dam­
age, while 7 means a major earthquake, capable
o f causing widespread, heavy damage.

"There is a lot, a lot o f dam age, especially
in the historic center and in som e outlying

tion service in Puebla said.
Large parts o f M exico C ity w ere flat-
tened by the 1985 earthquake, an 8.1 on the
R ichter scale, w hich m easures the energy
earthquakes release.
Bruce Presgrave, o f the N ational E arth­
quake Inform ation Center, said the epicenter
was in a town called Tehuacan in the extrem e
southeast o f Puebla state, about 135 m iles
southeast o f M exico City.
"This is quite an unusual location. M ost of
the big quakes occur along the coast and this
is inland." Presgrave said.
The earthquake was also felt in Guerrero
state, w here it provoked widespread panic and
damage, according to the Televisa network.
TV Azteca said the quake was also "felt quite
strongly" in the central state o f Mexico but no
damage was reported.
