tion is the anniversary o f 126 years o f
freedom from slavery. T his day is cel­
ebrated because it m arks the tim e ot the
year w hen Black Americ ans first got news
o fthe Em ancipation Proclam ation, signed
by President A braham Lincoln m onths
before on J a n .l, 1863. Bethel A .M .E.

Oasis Senior Housing Fair
O A SIS (O lder A dult Service & Infor­
m ation System ) w ill host the second an­
nual Senior H ousing F air in the M eier &
Frank A uditorium D ow ntow n, 10th floor
on W ednesday, June 16,h from 11:00 to
2:00 p.m. An educational organization,
O A SIS offers classes, trips and activities
to adults over 55. To becom e a m em ber

Soul Food Classes
Neighborhood Health Clinics (NHC)
will hold a series o f two-day Soul Food
Modifications W orkshops and Hands-on
Cooking Classes. W orkshop narticipants
and asked to bring a favorite soul food
recipe, a friend and enjoy an evening o f
teaming, fun and food. There will be no
food for the classes. NHC will sponsor
three classes on W ednesday evenings at
S elf-E nhancem ent Incorporated, 3920
I North Kerby Avenue in Portland. The ses­
sions will take place on June 16 and 23, and
September 22 and 29. All classes will be

Rosemont Housing Proposal
Healthtek M obile Services, a m obile
health care provider under contract with
Albertsons, will be offering osteoporosis
risk assessm ent at select A lbertsons stores
in the Portland area until June 12,h. The
exam, w hich is done w ith an ultrasound
m achine, takes just a few m inutes, does
not require a physic ian ’ s referral, and costs

Youth Volunteer Corps
On June 25 the Youth Volunteer Corps,
a program o f Campfire Boys and Girls, will
host Volunteam Day at Sellwood Park from
9:30 AM to 3 PM. Volunteam D ay is a
nationwide, yearly event that celebrates
and promotes youth’s contribution to the
community. This year the theme is Com ­
munity Collaboration Across the Nation.
From 9:30 - 1 PM there will be registration
and service projects w hich include non­
native species removal. From 1 - 3 PM,
there will be lunch, games and the reggae
band Earth Force will perform. There will
also be an inspirational speaker. A outh
ages 11-17 are invited to attend.
Sandy River Gorge
Preserve
The Nature Conservancy o f Oregon in­
vites anyone interested in preserving the
Sandy River Gorge Preserve (located just
twenty miles east o f Portland) to join a
volunteer work party on Saturday, June 12 at
10 A M . Volunteers will maintain trails and
remove the non-native species English ivy.
Participants are encouraged to bring appro­
priate clothing for the weather, a lunch, water
and weeding tools if possible. Call Molly
