City Will Sponsor
Summer Lunch Program
V ancouver-C lark Parks and Rec
reation Services w ill sponsor a sum
m er Food Service Program for chil
dren at 12 sites throughout the city.
Free lunches will be provided w eek
days from July 6 through Aug. 20 to
children under 19 years o f age.
The program is funded by the U.S.
Department o f Agriculture. Last sum
mer about 500 children were fed each
day for the 34 days the program oper
ated. The city conducts this program in
partnership with the Vancouver and
E vergreen sch o o l d istric ts and
Vancouver Housing Authority. The
Summer Food Service Program for
Children was established to ensure that
during school vacation periods, chil
dren could continue to receive the same
high-quality meals that are provided
during the school year. The program
results from awareness o f the critical
importance o f proper nutrition for chil
dren, and a belief that school vacations
should not end the availability o f nutri
tious meals for children. Meals are avail
able with out regard to race, color, na
tional origin, gender, age, disability,
political beliefs, sexual orientation, or
marital or family status. Not all prohib
ited bases (race, color, gender, etc.)
apply to all programs.
People with disabilities who require
alternative means for communication o f
program information should contact
Teresa Williamson at (360) 696-8065.

The downed power line suddenly slammed with
the force of 7,200 volts against the pavement. "You
could feel the ground shake clear across four lanes of
highway," remembered firefighter Dave Willson.
Only moments before, the line - a primary feeder
that had been brought down by a tree limb - was
just lying across a roadside hedge. It looked like a
harmless old garden hose; no wronder the man from
the neighborhood thought it would be safe to move it.
Happily, Captain Willson had seen him reach for the
line and acted quickly to stop him.
The firefighter had recently taken part in a
Pacific Power safety training session, where he
learned to treat all downed lines as deadly. "They
can snap back to life
It felt like a small earthquake,
now out of harm's way, Capt. Willson dispatched his
tire trucks to block off the highway and sidewalks until
Pacific Power's crew arrived on the scene.
Capt. Willson is modest about taking the credit
for averting a tragedy. "I'd rather say thanks to
lessons learned from Pacific Power." We say, we're
a good team.
