VATICAN CITY (AP) — Pope
John Paul II saluted Kosovo refu
gees among the pilgrim s gathered
Sunday in St. P e te r’s Square, say
ing he was praying for peace.
Speaking to a crow d o f thou
sa n d s, the p a le -lo o k in g po p e
singled out w hat he said was a
large group o f Kosovo refugees,
guests o f Italian charities.
“D ear brothers, in this m onth o f
M ay, we are praying particularly
for peace,” the p o ntiff said. “The
intercession o f the Blessed M ary
w ill obtain it for you and for all the
peoples tortured by w ar.”
John Paul has made repeated
appeals for an end to all fighting
over K osovo, and the V atican has
tried and failed to help broker a
peace accord.
S unday's hom ily was devoted
to charity w orkers, whom he called
exam ples o f love " in our w orld,
so distracted and indifferent.”
The Sunday greetings to pil
grim s are a seldom -m issed routine
o f the pope, who marks his 79th
birthday on Tuesday.
