AM ARAL
K S ta rry Sky is a
singularly gritty film.
M ade with m odest resources, this is
one of the best kitchen-sink dram as
to emerge from Brazil in recent years.
It strikes at the core of w om en’s role
w ithin B razilian society, w ithin rela
tio n sh ip s, an d w ith in them selves.
D alva (Alleyona Cavalli), is packing
h er suitcase to leave for M iam i in
search of a better life. She is abandon
ing her nagging m other, a passionate
but chauvinistic ex-boyfriend, and a
life in the doldrum s. Victor, the boy
friend in question, arrives unexpect
edly and forces his way in, spoiling
Dalva’s attempt to leave secretly. He des
perately tries to persuade Dalva to take
him back, and after a song and dance
she starts to give in. Still harboring af
fections for him , Dalva listens to him
with a mix of patience and suspicion.
Victor is a man living on the edge, out
of work and looking for ways to survive:
it’s clear he had it easy living with
Dalva. W hat started as a desperate act
of reconciliation rapidly deteriorates
into violence as Victor strives to reas
sert his authority and keep Dalva in his
life. As the police close in, however,
D alva strikes back.” - T O R O N T O
