OLCC Requests Dates of High
School Proms, and Graduations
To m any high school seniors,
“getting-dow n" and partying with
classmates and friends after a prom or
graduation cerem ony is as im portant
as the actual dance and com m ence
ment itself.
The Oregon L îquor C ontrol Com-
mission realizes that young people
will celebrate these festive times, but
doing so w ith o u t alco h o l is the
agency’s goal.
“Our goal is to make the unofficial
celebrations alcohol-free,” said Gary
McGrew, deputy director o fO L C C ’s
regulatory field operations.
“The O LCC is trying to prevent
students from starting their sum m er
vacation with a m inor in possession
or driving under the influence charge,
or even w orse a drastic injury or
death,” M cG rew said.
To com bat that problem o f under
age drinking this tim e o f year, the
OLCC collects the dates o f Oregon
High School prom s and graduations
to share w ith local law enforcem ent
agencies and m ajor hotels. Last year
the OLCC obtained the dates o f more
than 260 graduations and proms. The
dates are crucial to the OLCC in deter
mining when there may be parties
involving young people and alcohol.
“ W hen w e leam about a private
party involving m inors and alcohol,
our sta ff w ill try to stop the party
before it evens starts,” M cG rew ex
plained. "W e inform the sponsors
or property ow ner that O regon law
does not allow anyone but a parent
or guardian to m ake alcohol avail
able to a m inor.”
O reg o n law s also states that
ow ner’s o f property where such par
ties take place are legally responsible
and subject to having their property
confiscated as well as faces a sub
stantial fine. A nother law makes it
illegal for the person in control o f a
house; apartm ent or other property
to knowongly allows a mm or to drink
alcohol on the property. McGrew
w arned that parents who hold alco
hol parties for minors are subject to
crim inal charges and civil liability.
“Keep all parties involving minors
alcohol free,” he urged. The OLCC
has enlisted the cooperation o f O r
egon beer w holesalers to help pre
vent keg sales o fb ee r to minors. The
agency requests w holesalers to tell
custom ers about the penalties for
furnishing alcohol to minors. The
m inim um fine for furnishing is $350.
W holesalers are also asked to report
any sale o f a large num ber o f kegs to
one buyer to the OLCC.
A nyone with inform ation about
party plans involving m inors and al
cohol is encouraged to call the OLCC
