Postal Service Offers Extended Hours On
Thursday, April 15
The Postal Service will col­
lect and postmark income tax
returns until midnight Thurs­
day, April 15, 1999, at several
locations around Oregon and
Southwest Washington to as­
sist last-minute filers.
In addition, postal clerks will
assist customers at selected
offices listed below until as late
as midnight. Selected offices will
also offer curbside acceptance
o f tax returns that have correct
postage affixed.
The Postal Service urges
customers to avoid the dead­
line-day crowds by mailing their
income tax returns early and by
ensuring each envelope carries
proper postage.
Below is a list o f locations
where Postal Service personnel
will provide special “Tax Day"
hours and serv ices on Thurs­
day, April 15. Taxpayer assis­
tance will also be available at
some locations from the Oregon
Department of Revenue and/or
the Internal Revenue Service.

Millions Awarded To
Smokers
Phillip M orris, a tobacco com ­
pany lost m illions o f dollars in two
sm oking-related law suits in C alifor­
nia and Oregon. The com pany was
charged with m isleading the public
about the dangers o f sm oking and
for m arketing cig arettes to teen ag ­
ers. Judge John M u n te ro fS a n Fran­
cisco aw arded Patricia H enley $25
million. A similar verdict was reached
in Portland where the family o f Jesse
Williams was granted $79.5 million in
punitive damages and $ 1.6 million in
com pensatory dam ages to be paid
out by Phillip M orris.

Gay Murder

Shepherd was sen ten ced by D is­
trict Judge Jeffrey D onnell o f W yo­
m ing to serve tw o con secu tiv e life
sentences for the incident co m m it­
ted six m onths ago. The victim was
tied up, kicked in the groin and
beaten 18 tim es around the head.
Illegal Workers
Targeted
The Im m igration and N aturaliza­
tion Service (IN S) stepped-up their
enforcem ent strategy against illegal
aliens with mass firings o f immigrants
possessing forged or im proper docu­
m ents. The new policy has created
w idespread resentm ent, especially
am ong im m igrant workers that have
held their jo b s in this country for
m any years.
Microsoft Trial
The next trial date for M icrosoft is
set for the year 2000. By the end o f
this year, W indow s 98 will be near
the end o f its life span and W indows
2000 is scheduled to be released next
year. C urrently, m illions ofcom put-
ers have M icro so ft’s W eb brow ser,
Internet E xplorer, installed by de­
fault. And, A m erica O nline has re­
cently agreed to buy N etscape C om ­
munications, M icrosoft's major com­
petito r in the brow ser m arket.

Valerie W hite has been named assistant
dean o f Lewis & Clark C ollege's Graduate
School o f Professional Studies. White came
to Lewis & Clark as an adjunct faculty
m em ber in the graduate school in 1994.
As an educator, W hite has focused par­
ticularly on diversity issues, working to
“ help people turn down the noise o f their
own culture and to see things from m ultiple
perspectives."
White oversees the graduate school’s
registrar's office, educational administration
program, special education: deafand hard-of-
heanng program. Center for Professional De­
velopment, and Northwest Writing Institute.
White worked at US Bancorp from 1975to
1991, where she rose to vice president and
manager of the employee services division.
In 1992, she started her own business. North
Star Consulting, an organizational and per­
sonal effectiveness consulting practice.
W hite served on T ri-M et’s board o f
directors from 1993 to 1997 and has also
sat on the boards o f the U rban League o f
Portland, Oregon, Environm ental Council
and the Oregon G overnors' School ofC iti-
zen Leadership
W hite is completing her doctorate in
cultural perspectives from the University
o f W ashington She earned a m aster’s de­
gree in whole systems design from Antioch
University in Seattle and a bachelor's de­
gree in sociology from W hitman College.
