Job Readiness Training ( JRT)
T his five-day intensive pro­
gram teaches youth the neces­
sary skills to succeed in the w ork

fessional presents such topics as:

phone E tiquette, U nderstanding
B ehavioral Styles, D ealing w ith
C onflict in the W orkplace, C us­
tom er Service, Interview ing Tech­
niques, R esources fo rjo b Search,
W orkplace & Pol icies, Tim e M an­
agement, and much more. Through
classroom training, field trips and
on-site jobexploration, youth gam
a greater insight into the realities
o f the w orking w orld. W Y D ’s
ongoing supporters and business

com pletion o f the JR T program .

This program is designed to
provide jo b training and w ork o p ­
portunities for W Y D graduates.
T here are tw o deli locations - 619

SW N im bus, Beaverton. This pro­
gram is m ade possible w ith the
generous support o f Starbucks
C offee, A didas, and G rand C en­
tral B anking Co. The deli provides
fresh m ade sandw iches, soups,
and pastries. T he dow ntow n lo­
cation is now offering coiporate
catering services.
Youth Entrepreneurial Training
& Business Incubator
T he Y o u th E n trep ren e u rial
T raining is a “hands on learning”
process w here youth leant about
business by starting and operat­
ing their ow n individual busi­
nesses. W ith the com pletion o f a
b usiness plan , p articipants are
eligible to apply to our m icro-loan
for capital to initiate their busi­
ness. An attem pt is m ade to m atch
n e ig h b o r h o o d m e n to r s w ith
young business ow ners for at least
the first six m onths o f business.
All graduates o f the YES program
are eligible to enroll in en tre p re­
neurial training. In addition, w e
recently opened a n eighborhood
based business incubator for b u si­
ness started by o u r participants.
Ropes Course and First
Wednesdays
A fter youth have com pleted the
YES program , they are eligible to
participate in the Ropes Course.
The Ropes C ourse is designed to
take the youth to the next level in
w orking as a team , in trusting o th­
ers and in developing their self­
esteem. Tw o W estern Y outh D e­
velopm ent trainers, who are Cam p
C ollins C ertified, facilitate this
training. The w eekend includes
problem solving gam es, physical
activities, and rigorous em otional
and physical adventures.
T he First W ednesday o f every
month, the YES graduates can com e
together at W estern Y outh D evel­
opm ent and participate in various
activities for ongoing support.
All program s are free ofcharge,
due to ongoing support from co m ­
m unity foundations, businesses
and individuals. W e are eternally
grateful for their contributions.

cipient o f the 84,h S pingam Medal.
Bond said, “The Spingam Award
C o m m ittee u n an im o u sly elected
Graves as som eone w hose life per­
sonifies the N AACP ’ s hi ghest honor. ”
G raves said , “ T his h o n o r ex em ­
plifies the p in n acle o f reco g n itio n
for a lifetim e o f w ork to w ard s the

achievem ent. T hey w ould have

The late J.E. Spingam , former
N A A C P Chairm an, instituted the
Medal in 1914. Itw as designed tocall
attention o f the A m ericans people to
the existence o f merit and achieve­
ment am ong A m erican o f A frican
descent and to serve as a stim ulus to
young people.

Vision and Passion
Vis ion and Passion is the them e for
the Seventh A nnual A sian American
Y outh Leadership Conference, sched­
uled for Tuesday, M ay 4 at Lewis and
Clark College. Selectedhigh-achieve-
m ent Asian-heritage students from
m etropolitan area high schools will
attend w orkshops to develop skills
they will use throughout their lives.

L ead ersh ip C o n feren ce, held d u r­
ing A sian H eritag e M onth, h ig h ­
lights the ach iev em en ts and c o n tri­
butions o f O re g o n 's grow ing A sian
com m unity.
“M any people d o n ’t realize how
large and diverse the A sian com m u­
nity is in O regon. It includes people
from forty-nine countries, including
Japan, V ietnam . C am bodia, Laos,
China, Pakistan, India, Israel, Syria,
Iran and m any others,” says Paul
Duong a m em ber o f the conference ’ s
planning com m ittee. “W ith A sian
being O reg o n ’s largest foreign trad­
ing partner, and with significant in­
vestm ent in Oregon by A sian com pa­
nies, the student attending the con­
ference are an im portant resource to
our com m unity. It makes great sense
to invest in them.
T he conferen ce, co -sponsored
by N ike Inc, Portland Public Schools,
the Office ofN eighborhood Involve­
m ent R efugee and Im m igrant Pro­
gram , and Lew is and Clark C ollege,
will be attended by over 350 Asian-
heritage youth. The keynote speaker

Veteran's Clinic To Move
PO R TLA N D , Ore. - A clinic for
veterans w ho w ish to file disability
claims will be moving to a new building
April 3. The com pensation and Pen­
sion Unit o f the Portland V A M edical
Center will m ove to the hospital’s
Vancouver Division at 1601 E 4*Plain
Boulevard in Vancouver, Wash.
The new unit w ill open A pril 7 on
the second floor o f the B arnes R eha­
bilitation Center, Building D-7, on the
southeast co m er o f the V ancouver
Cam pus. Exam hours are from 8 a.m.
to 4:30 p.m ., M onday through Friday.
T he m ed ical c e n te r’s C o m p en ­
sation and P en sio n unit is cu rren tly
located at the m edical ce n te r’s O u t­
p atien t C lin ic at 8909 SW B arbur
B oulevard.
The unit, w hich performs physical
exam inations for veterans w ho, is
seeking medical com pensation for ill­
ness or injuries. The six staff in the
unit sees nearly 6,000 veterans each
year in the course o f determ ining
w hat level o f m edical services a vet­
eran should receive.

because the Vancouver campus has

commodate additional patient visits.
Veterans who wish to claim benefits
through the Compensation and Pen­
sion process must first file a claim with
the Veterans Benefits Administration.
