OBT Conducts In-
School Residencies
at Two Portland
Elementary Schools
Oregon B allet T heatre (O B T ) is
currently conducting in-school resi­
dencies at two P ortland elem entary
schools through its education o u t­
reach program, Project F I N.D. (Find
and Inspire New D ancers). T hrough
the month o f M ay, a total o f 100 third
and fourth graders from M eriw ether
Lew is and B rooklyn elem entary
schools w ill be p a rtic ip a tin g in
dance, m ovem ent and music classes.
In addition to providing arts educa­
tion, Project F.I.N .D . classes bring
opportunities for students to con­
nect dance and m usic to academ ic
areas such as E nglish, m ath and so­
cial sciences.
Project F.I.N.D. provides partici­
pating children w ith classes in m u­
sic and a w ide range o f dance and
m ovem ent styles, including contem ­
porary dance, yoga, P eruvian folk
dance, tai chi, and A frican dance.
This y ear’s students w ill also re­
ceive instruction in the geography
and cultural influences ofeach m ove­
m ent form and learn how m ath con­
cepts, w riting and storytelling can
be an integral part o f dance. T hey
w ill also have inform al show ings o f
class projects, to u r O regon B allet
T h eatre’s dance studios in dow n­
tow n Portland, and have in-school
visits w ith professional dancers from
O B T ’s com pany. T he students re­
cently attended an O regon Ballet
T heatre “ M agic o f D ance” program
- a fully-produced perform ance at
the PortlandC ivic A uditorium , com ­
plete w ith costum es, scenery, and
lighting - featuring ballets danced
by the professional com pany and
students from T he School o f O regon
Ballet Theatre.

P roject F.I.N .D . students are en ­
hanced m u lti-cu ltu ral aw areness,
self-esteem , control and self-disci­
pline; im proved listening skills and
ability to follow directions and pay
attention to detail; g reater recogni­
tion o f personal space and consider­
ation o f others; and a sense o f ac­
com plishm ent. A lso, up to 50 Project
F.I.N .D . students have the opportu­
nity each year to take p ail in a free,
tw o-w eek sum m er dance w orkshop
d u r in g d u r in g O re g o n B a lle t
T h e a tre ’s ann u al o u td o o r dance
event, “ O B T E xposed."

C larendon, Faubion, Lincoln Park,
N ortheast C om m unity, Peninsula,
Riverside, Shaver, V em on and Vose.
