W hat constitutes a genuine so­ cial vision for the future? In my opinion, it is a vision o f a de-bu- reaucratized, de-partisam zed politi­ cal reform w hich takes us beyond top-dow n, tw o party-ism to bot­ tom -up m ulti-party-ism . In that en­ vironm ent, w e m ay freely debate and decide not sim ply how to de­ velop new ones both private and public w hich w ill enhance and en­ ric h th e liv es o f the A m erican people in the next century. Historic Hawthorne Bridge to Reopen M u ltn o m a h c o u n ty ’s h isto ric H aw thorne Bridge will reopen to traf­ fic on Sunday, April 25 after a closure o f nearly thirteen m onths forpainting, deck replacem ent and renovation. On Saturday, April 24 the public w ill be invited to tour the com pleted project and attend a celebration before the bridge reopens to traffic. The 89-year old W illam ette River Bridge was closed M arch 31,1998 for w hat was expected to be a 12-m onth closure. In February 1999 project lead­ ers announced the reopening would be delayed three to six weeks due to unforeseen custom w ork, severe w in­ ter w eather and corrosion. Project leaders credit im proved w eather in M arch and the contractor’s coopera­ tion w ith allow ing them to m eet the new target date on April 25.
