considered the heir apparent to
John Elw ay, w as traded by the
D enver Broncos to the C arolina
Panthers for tw o undisc losed draft
picks.
The picks w ill be in the 1999 and
2000 drafts. Lew is was passed on
the depth chart this year by 1998
draft pick B rian Griese.

how to allocate the $54.5 m illion in
dam ages am ong the 302 D ivision 1
schools. A ttorneys’ fees will com e
out o f that figure.
Executive Director Cedric Dempsey
said the N CA A w ill contribute about
$22 million from cost-saving measures
the next three years, leaving the
schools responsible for $32.4 million.
He w ould not speculate on w hat the
school-by-school allocation might be.
D em psey pointed to tw o possible
p la n s an N C A A c o m m itte e is
considering - one, dividing the total
equally am ong all D ivision 1 schools,
the other based on di vision o f revenue
to the size o f the school.
