Scientists from the Univ ersity ofNew South
W ales in Sy dney, Australia found that hair
from the healthy women had a different
molecular structure than hair from cancer
patients. Researchers drew hair from the
pubic area which was found to be the most
reliable for X-ray analysis to detect breast
cancer. They determined that a mutation o f
the BRC A 1 gene is associated with a higher
nsk o f breast cancer.

The Sunset T unnel in the C oast Range on
U.S. 26 re-opened Friday at noon, according
to O regon D epartm ent o f T ransportation
officials. Crews com pleted the project to repair
the tunnel by w orking nearly round the clock,
seven days a week.
An in d ep en d en t p an el ask ed by the
O reg o n T ra n sp o rta tio n C o m m issio n to
investigate the partial collapse o f the tunnel
and oversee repairs gave the go-ahead for
opening, follow ing final repairs and cleanup
early this m orning The panel’s findings
concurred with the opinion o f O D O I staff
and consultants that the work needed is
com plete, and it is safe to re-open the tunnel
for the m otoring public.
The tunnel has been closed since January
28, when it partially collapsed ODOTofficials
had predicted that repairs w ould require a
five-weekclosure. Friday's re-opening, which
m eets the agency’s self-im posed deadline,
com es as the result o f an extensive effort on
the part o f m any to re-open this vital link
betw een the northern O regon C oast and the
s ta te 's larg est p o p u latio n ce n te r in the
