bacteria called plaque.
W hen the teeth are developing,
depressions and grooves form in the
chew ing surfaces o f the enamel.
These features are called pits and
fissures. They are difficult to keep
clean because toothbrush bristles
cannot reach into them. They create
snug places for bits o f food and plaque
to hide. The sealant forms a thin cov
ering that keeps out plaque and food
and decreases the risk o f decay.
Each tooth takes only a few min
utes to seal. After cleaning the teeth
that will be sealed, the dentist condi
tions the chewing surface to help the
sealant adhere to the tooth. The seal
ant is then painted onto the tooth
enamel, where it bonds to the tooth.
W hile the sealant remains intact,
the tooth surface will be protected
from decay. Sealants hold up well
under the force o f normal chewing.
They may last several years before a
reapplication is needed.
A total prevention program in
cludes brushing twice a day, cleaning
between the teeth daily with floss,
regular visits to the dentist, and lim
iting the number o f between meal
snacks. Ask your family dentist about
the benefits o f adding sealants to this
prevention program.

Help plan Tri-Met’s future
■ Public comment welcomed on how to expand it
Tri-Met is hosting a series of open houses around the region so
the community can help the agency make choices on how best to
expand the transit system. The public is invited to comment on
the proposed three-year plan, as well as on ways to pay for the
new service. Tri-Met will incorporate public suggestions into the
service expansion package expected to be presented to the Board
of Directors in late March. If the Board approves the plan,
service improvements could begin in September, 1999.
